You want the Japan on. The ingredients are the key to telling them apart. The American has Soy oil instead of vegetable oil that's in the Japan one.
There's physical container differences, but the ingredients are what I'd go by.

The 6-month old one from the Japanese Supermarket tasted WAY better. I did a side-by-side taste test. The Costco one just tasted like normal mayo. I guess it could be subtle? If you had an egg salad, you wouldn't notice, but I eat it with fries, in sandwiches, and everything, so it was immediately obvious to me.
A few weeks later, I bought a fresh one from the Japanese Supermarket, tried it, and it tasted exactly like I expected (delicious!). So, I'm not sure which ones you've had, but they're definitely different. I heard the Costco one (Made in USA) doesn't have MSG, but people in here say that's not the case. Note: imo, MSG is delicious and adding it to the QP would explain why it has better flavor.
