Why not just send somebody a QR code with a link to a video or audio recording then?

This seems gimmicky. Besides, you really can make something like this yourself. The wife and I bought photo ornaments from Hobby Lobby this past Christmas and printed out QR codes that linked to private YouTube videos. Laminated the QR code and super glued it to the back. The ornament with our daughter's photo had a video of her playing a Christmas song on the piano. My son also had his own video for his ornament, too. Where is the video for this card stored? Will it still be available in a couple years down the road? I guess the same can be said for YouTube but I'm feeling a little more confident with it.
