Just did a PC Part Picket test... Even if you bought the cheapest B650/X670/B760/Z790 WiFi mother board & case & 750+W PSU, you would still pay more than this combo. It got me to $220, including bottom-of-the-barrel brands.

So, in my book, this is a decent deal.

Add AMD 8700G and 6000 RAM and you get a decent gaming PC without buying a GPU

$179 for the cheapest AM5 processor (and not a bad one, either). Add RAM for $80 or so and you are set for $460.(+ tax... actually, this isn't exactly a steal). Also note that there is an Intel equivalent to this setup that is also on sale for $200.

Anyone know how loud this case is with PS? I'm looking for quiet case/setup. No gaming. Just office work and photoshop.
You dont need this for that. Just get Minisforum mini pc for office work.

There is a dust filter panel at the bottom, you can add 3 120mm intake fans there.

Wow, seriously thought this was an air purifier until I saw "ASUS" in the title!
If you install a mesh filter and crank those fan curves, technically...

it's $329 but I know Microcenter gonna sell it for $300 or so when it's available.
It's basically a R7 7700 with GTX 1060 6GB performance all at 65W TDP

You can always buy a GPU for it later on too.
You dont want to use these APUs with a dGPU, because they are gimped compared to normal CPUs, like the 8700G having half the L3 cache then the cheaper 7600x or 7700x has. 8700G still on PCIe 4.0, etc. I mean it will work, its just not recommended.

Terrible advice. An 8700G is $330 and it's GPU performance is worse than a $100 GPU. On top of that iGPUs need the fastest RAM (added expense) you can feed them, unlike dGPUs that have their own VRAM. If someone is looking for the highest FPS on tight budget they would be VASTLY better off with a $100 i3-12100F + $200 Arc A750 or $220 RX 6600, gaming performance would roughly be 3X higher than the 8700G for the same price. Obviously you sacrifice multi-thread performance, but most gamers dont care about that. AMD's APU pricing makes no sense for gamers, UNLESS they absolutely cant fit a GPU into their case (SFFPC), but that's a rare necessity.

No personal experience with this one in particular, but mesh cases like this are typically going to be louder than one with solid panels, unless you spend an ungodly amount of money on Noctua fans.

I've had this case for a while, and I like it. It's a little big coming from the ITX world, but it fits everything pretty and the cable management is easy. My main gripe is that if you typically set your computer on your desk the power supply is up front. I didn't think this would be an issue, but I ended up having to buy a nicer PSU because my last EVGA power supply had a slight whine that was intensified by it being so close to me.

In the very initial stages of looking into building a promox/plex/ha homelab and the hardware learning curve is steep having not looked at it in 20 years. Would this be a good foundation?

The 8700G is definitely a premium buy... integrated graphics on par with a GTX 1650 [tomshardware.com]. That's a $100-150 GPU value... which is surely what AMD uses to justify the CPU's price.

A lower end CPU like the Ryzen 5 7600 is about half the price. The graphics performance is... much lower than the 8700G. But for eSports or other functions which don't demand a dedicated graphics card the Ryzen 5 7600 is a powerful, efficient option.

Good luck!
Jon
for roughly the same price as the 8700g, you can get a ryzen 5 7600 + 6600xt that will blow it out of the water in gaming performance.

You want to stick with Intel if you are going to run Plex for hardware transcoding. Look for a processor with built in iGPU (non F version).
