This is not the greatest tape in the world, no. This is just a tribute.

The reviews say the clear should be 1 star, basically a different product.

Yeah definitely not as good as ripstop versions. However, it works well enough for temporary repair. I have not used it for leaks but worked well for fixing my torn tent pole channel. Good enough at this price. I am in for 1.

I've used this a couple of times to patch holes in a down jacket. Yeah the ripstop tape is better, but I haven't had any issues with the clear tape. The ripstop only comes in a handful of colors and none matched my jacket, so the clear one was a better option for me.

I wonder if this would be good to reinforce the bottom of a backpack

I just bought the clear one last week to mend holes in a puffa jacket. It's matte and not invisible exactly, sort of like gift wrap tape. It's only been a few days, but it seems to be holding up fine. It's quite stiff - like a plastic film, so for curved areas you might need multiple pieces rather than trying to make it bend. A key thing is cleaning the surface (as best you can) and rounding the edges so the patch doesn't catch on things. It's fine, but I probably would have got the more 'legit' tape if they had it in the color I needed.

I have a few colors of Tenacious Tape and it's fantastic stuff. Saved my favorite black 850 fill puffer. I've washed that jacket many times since the repair and it is still holding and is nearly invisible due to good color match.

I bought the clear thinking it would be more useful due to easy color matching. I was disappointed. The clear does not stick like the colored tapes do. I would pass on the clear, even at a discount.
