I'm not a big fan of tacticool to begin with, but I don't see why I would pay $30 for this when I can get a fiberglass handled hatchet for $9 and a hickory handled hatchet for $13 at Harbor Freight. [harborfreight.com] Heck, you can get a full-size fiberglass handle 3.5lb axe for $22. I love these companies who try to make a cool version of an everyday tool and charge 10X what it's worth. $60 MSRP is just silly, unless I'm missing something.

The only thing I got is this one is full tang. So it's not just a fiberglass handle.

I own the Fiskars hatchet. It doesn't look anything like this. Not full tang, completely different method for mounting the head. Comparing the two, my conclusion would be exactly the opposite: Fiskars didn't make this. On the other hand, if you compare it to the Gerber Pack Hatchet, there are some striking similarities in design and construction.

I'm not understanding at all that large oval cut out in the hatchet head. It appears to exist solely to interlock with the locking knob of that plasticky sheath. That's exactly where you don't want to remove material. Reducing mass right where the hatchet delivers inertial force to the cutting edge would do nothing but decrease performance.

The design tail, wagging the design dog.
