If you check on travel search sites (kayak, expedia, etc.), there appear to be flights by a consolidator for around $650 RT that involves flying Spirit NYC->LAX, a long layover (9+ hours), then Zipair to Tokyo, and then a similar return coming back with a long layover in LAX. You may have to pay extra for insurance in case of travel disruption--not sure if they will guarantee you get a flight with the basic ticket if the first leg is delayed.

Otherwise, you'd add anywhere from Spirit's cheap $135 RT to LAX from NYC, or maybe $250+ on Delta NYC-SJC and then catch Zipair the next day (add the cost of a hotel room each way???).

But, maybe make a mini-trip of it with a visit to the Bay Area for one, or more days.

Otherwise, it looks like non-stop flights from the east coast will be $1200+

On a side note: I really liked Zipair. But, you really have to be prepared and expect that you'll pay for seats, baggage, food, etc. That still adds up to much less in certain seasons than othetr major airlines. The plane was in good condition, the food was not bad--but you really should get a Bento box or other take-out meal to bring on board rather than get the airline food. The Zipair food was much better than the meal I had on United, which was free, and awful.

Pay about $11 for access to the lounge before your flight so you have time to relax and get drinks (unlimited non-alcoholic included), and some simple light snacks.

I can confirm that in Tokyo they are very strict about the baggage weight, so you should watch that carefully.
I had a fantastic experience with Zipair this past summer (SJC > NRT).

You pay extra for everything, but the prices were quite reasonable, I thought. The plane was a fairly new-looking, clean 787. Food was pretty decent and, again, reasonably priced. Crew was fine - not excellent, but still much nicer/friendlier than a typical US-based airline, imo.

I recommend purchasing a compact luggage scale and take it with you, though. They are very strict about weight limits and, if you are over limit at the airport, there is an extra surcharge compared to pre-purchasing the weight-limit increase. I picked up so many souvenirs that I was really close. I pre-weighed my luggage the night before and realized I was over the limit, so I ended up wearing my jacket at check-in (even though it was a hot July day) and stuffed my coat pockets with all my heaviest stuff. They weigh all bags, but not anything you're wearing This was only during the return portion though. The crew at SJC didn't weigh the carry-on at all.
Yes, it's just you.

This is the best time to travel to Japan. Weather is about the same has the Bay Area and there is less tourist. If you have never been to Japan. Watch YouTube's to show you all the things you need to do and don't do (culture). It's pretty easy to travel there. Food is pretty cheap and there is no tipping. Avoid taxis because they're very expensive and only if you're trying to do it out of convenience.

Zip is their budget airline so you'll be paying extra for food and luggage. I hear really good things about their business class, but you still gotta pay extra for things.

Depends on where you live and where you've been. It's a new experience for the West, but not as much if you already live in East Asia.

I've taken Zipair a few times and was generally satisfied. If there is a better deal on JAL and ANA, take that instead. The best part about Zipair (and hope there will be more competition soon) is that it's a good economic option as a transit to the rest of Asia from the US.

People who live in the east coast what's the strategy for taking advantage of these flight deals to Japan?
Buy a separate ticket to LAX one day before the flight? I'm scared of losing the flight to Japan due to flight delays when going to LAX.

If they have this price for 2025 I'll be all over it. I've gone to Japan in 2022 and 2023 and LOVED every bit of it. I can't wait to go back for a third time.

For this of you that've flown Zipair. Did you like it?

I took the $2500 lie-flat flights SJC-NRT. Very happy with the service. 6'2" no issues with the seats. Boarding was weird (back-to-front and no Priority for Business) and they are super-anal about carry-on weight, but the food was good and it's better than half the normal cost of lie-flat direct.

Sigh...praying Zipair comes to NYC

I moved to NYC from the SF/SJ area literally months before Zipair came into the picture, so I never got to enjoy those $500 nonstop RT flights to Japan 😭

ANA/JAL/UA had their monopoly and were (and still are) charging $1200-1500 for SFO-TYO if you wanted nonstop. Meanwhile $500-800 is pretty normal for LAX-TYO nonstop even without Zipair around.

Never quite understood why LAX had it so good when it's almost the exact same flight. Some people suggested it's because they have more airlines (AA, Delta, Singapore) competing on that route, but SFO and NYC could use some more love too...

I would disagree with the weather, just went last year during these days and it was pretty chilly to be honest. Had to wear multiple layers and there was also a snowstorm too. I would say that it was still a wonderful trip and less tourists for sure
