I am still not getting it, but my brain has been considering this as an impulse buy for a week now. The other alternative impulse I been considering is one of those the d8 bluetooth controllers and phone (such as the bsp brand though it looks like many people are renaming it when they post it on Amazon and Walmart dot com as American brands and not from a drop shipper like Ali Express) those options are in the $30 range to $45 dollars currently.

For now, my RG35XX running Garlic OS w/Tinybestset + Arcade has been my go-to enjoyable emulator.
My hope is to eventually use the RG35XX H as a portable retro/multiplayer machine. For now it's best feature was how easy it was to set up Wifi and Retro Achievements.

part of my brain is thinking a bluetooth controller that is nice (not the cheapest one, one that use hall effect magnets so no switch like stick drift) is $30 , or get a full console for $60

I'm hopeful it'll run a decent chunk of Dreamcast, N64 and maybe even some DS games. It's already playing some games my RG35XX simply cannot, which is exciting.
I was already impressed the RG35XX can run many PS1 and earlier games. If you're interested in a device that can run a bit more, I think the 35XX Plus or H are both excellent options to consider. I went H for the Analogue sticks and the hand feel is good for my bigger hands.
