The i3-1215U is a gigantic improvement from its predecessor, the Intel Core i3-1115G4, and faster than the Intel Core i3-N305.

If your store doesn't have it, maybe keep the page around to look for an even cheaper Open Box to pop up.

I've never purchased from MicroCenter before. Looks like this doesn't come with any warranty. Thoughts on the worth of buying the one year protection plan for $29.99 to cover product failure issues (not those caused by damage, spills, etc.)

Tks!
It has a 1 year warranty, but also microcenter warranties you can buy extra are second to none. Assuming you have a microcenter nearby you can bring it into

Agreed. I built my first computer in 1998, and it cost about $1200. I was working a retail job that paid $6/hr, so I had to work and save 200 hours of wages. This thing, after tax is $216ish and minimum wage in my state is about $14.50, so roughly 15 hours of work to buy. And it's definitely faster than my AMD K6 at 450mhz.
And it is amazing to think of what $1200 could buy in 1998. That was a decent used car. We can complain about inflation all we want in 2024 however computers, video games, monitors, etc are pennies on the dollar (comparatively) what they once were....food and housing, no so much Wink

My first computer, didn't build it of course, was a Tandy 2 purchased by my mother. I think she paid $2K-ish in the early / mid 80's. Insane.

Thanks. I play games sometimes, but I always have like 100 Chrome tabs open so I need a lot of RAM. I was planning to buy the Asus TUF 15 with a 4060 Nvidia graphics card that sold for $750 around Black Friday/Christmas but it sold out before I could check out. Have been waiting for something similar since then (which I know this laptop is not).
This one from Costco is a decent package:

One catch: the RAM is NOT upgradeable.

Thanks! Decent package indeed but would prefer RAM upgradability.

seems like a great deal. i ordered one for in-store pickup.

thoughts on memory expansion? I see that my micro center has an 8gb ddr4-3200 sodimm stick for $18 that would bring this to 12gb (since it's currently 2 x 4gb). use is light browsing, zoom calls, and some MS office. thoughts on whether 12gb does the job?

I bought two of these in 2021 but they had i3-1125u, which has 4 "real cores" and no HT.
Classic it depends.

We perform all those exact tasks just fine on an older el-cheapo ($150 at MC) HP that came with a Ryzen 3 CPU (much less capable than the i3 for the OP model) and an 8GB RAM (only 6 of which is usable because the graphic card steals the other 2GB). No, it's not blazingly fast or anything, but the performance is perfectly adequate for light duties. Since this HP model's CPU is quite a bit better, it should be exemplary for those tasks, even at the default RAM.

Commodore 64, $1000 a Sears, floppy hook up to our TV.
In 1989 paid $200 for 2mb ram for an IBM compatible and $500 for a 60mb Maxtor hard drive. 60 mb, HUGE....

If dual channel is possible, does adding 8 GB also make the integrated graphics faster?

I noticed this was the case with a different Intel laptop, where single channel resulted in only "UHD graphics" but dual channel resulted in "Iris graphics."

My first-ever own PC was a Zenith (remember?) 8086 CPU machine with a 256K RAM back in 1985. A hard drive? Nah. Two floppy drives took care of that. $1200. It served me until 1990 when I moved up to a 386-33 Gateway with a mammoth 120MB HD. $1800. I thought I would never need another PC for the rest of my life.

You don't need more memory for what you described. Even 4GB would've been enough. You would've needed more RAM if you played graphics-intensive games, did video-editing or hosted database.
Not sure about this one, but most recent laptops have soldered RAM, making them UNupgadable.
