I need something to replace an i7 2600 machine used for office, some elementary level photo work. Based on my little research, I'm not seeing many deals on prebuilt office use desktops that aren't sff and not loaded down with goofy rgb lighting. Would this cpu be a good fit?

If so, can anyone make suggestions on parts to pair this with, or a descent prebuilt AM4 or AM5 or intel under $1k. I really feel I can build better for less than prebuilt, but not any experience looking for office builds or building an office desktop, just gaming budget rigs for the kids (and one for me Smilie

For office use you're better off going for the 5600G or 5500G which have integrated graphics.

Guess they're finally trying to get rid of these. Haven't seen any am4 cpu deals in a while and seeing 2 in a week. Missed last one but guess I should get one to help one of my friends

If you don't need a graphics card (for 3d gaming mostly) or room for lots of storage drives, the mini PC option is worth considering.

Minisforum, Acemagic, and Beelink brands seem to be the most commonly posted on Slickdeals.

The ones with Intel's low-power N95 CPU are under $150... example [amazon.com]
For more CPU power, there are lots of options at lots of price points. Just search, or set a deal alert for, "mini pc".

This is a great CPU and good bang for the buck. For gaming it's about 95% the speed of CPU's costing 2-4x this. This does not have a built in GPU so if you need that get the 5600G. Note that the G version runs about 5% slower than this. There is a 5600X version that is identical to this but is clocked slightly higher. Not worth it IMHO but it is a few percent faster.

As far as the DDR4 vs DDR5 debate. For gaming you gain about 5% give or take with DDR5. I elected to save money and go DDR4 due to the fact that the DDR4 RAM and MB's are a bit cheaper. I then took the money I saved and bought a faster GPU.

In response to the person asking about updating an aging i7 2600, head over to Newegg and pick up a nice refurb with an i5 or i7 5th or 6th gen CPU for about $200. Then pick up a cheap 1TB SSD (MX500 is a nice one) and upgrade the RAM for about $40. So for about $300 you have a nice little system that will last a few years and serve you well. Since these include a free copy of windows, you can do a fresh windows 10 install for free by downloading an install copy of windows at the microsoft web page. Pick up the USB version and install it to a flash drive (8gb or higher) and in the bios set the boot order to boot from the USB.

I mean, $260 for this and it's miles ahead what you have now for office work. Throw in a second 8gb stick of ram if you really need to and call it a day: https://www.ebay.com/itm/12608356...SwsD5k-hxS

I've bought from Vipoutlet before and they're a subsidy of WalMart and I had a fine experience. The item looked new and unused so I wonder if they just sell brown-box versions of stuff that gets clearanced out at Walmart. Also note it carries a 1-year warranty and includes Windows 11.

Hard to beat that when building a DIY office machine.

I've found that when it comes to office-level PCs, building them is not really the way anymore. There's little need to hand pick off-the-shelf parts as the system will never be stressed like a gaming PC, and you'll probably never upgrade individual components aside from the SSD and RAM which are almost always user-upgradable in pre-built PCs anyways. Look at what I linked for $260 [ebay.com], including windows 11 and a 1-year warranty. You simply can't match that when building from scratch, but of course you are getting a better PC when you DIY - if it matters to you as these components will last 10 years before wearing out anyways.

Is this a good upgrade from a Ryzen 5 3600X? I have a GTX 1660 Ti video card.

Sometimes upgrading to the newer cpus aren't worth it, new motherboard, buy new ram (no really point in using slow old rams on something that can handle twice the previous speed. He's asking for an upgrade to and older slower cpu not a replacement towards the newest generation. Besides if you buy the newest generation right after release you're paying a very hefty premium price minus the scalpers driving up the price. Wait about a year after that then you can decide.

For gaming purposes I would not bother; your video card will end up bottlenecking you in most games well before your processor does. For other stuff it would be a moderate upgrade, but still probably not worth it; if you are doing enough video editing or image processing that your current system feels slow, you should probably skip getting another 6 core and moving up to an 8 or more core processor, like the 5700x.
