Cheapest is to get one of their $15 a month plans. There are two $15 a month plans, one has unlimited talk and text, the other one has 500 min, 500 texts, and 500mb of data.

Also note that 99% of all "reconditioned" phones (whether iPhone or Android) sold by Tracfone are already unlocked or qualify for unlocking without any need to activate with a plan or wait 60 days. So the first thing to do when you get a "reconditioned" phone from them is to dial #83865625# that will tell you the unlock status. If it offers for you to enter a code, enter the phone's IMEI on Tfunlockingpolicy website, chances are very high it already qualifies for unlocking without the need to buy any plans. If on the second page you get an "error" from the website, just call Tracfone's unlocking department at 1-888-442-5102. If they don't cooperate, just file an FCC complaint and they will do you right in no time as they fear the regulator.

It's an OK deal, but not a great one. With battery capacity at 90%, the phone must have been used for at least a year and it wasn't reconditioned by Apple. I've purchased a couple of reconditioned iPhone's (11 and Xr) from Tracfone before (mostly with reward points). All appeared to be customer returns with little usage. I was hoping these 12's were also customer returns, but it doesn't seem to be the case.

Yesterday ST lowered brand new 12 and 12 mini by $100 but the price went back today. I think that was a better deal since it would come with Apple Care and you didn't have to buy a plan. You could activate it on Tracfone with $0~$10 and have it unlocked after 60 days.

64g iphone 12 refurbs start at $200 on ebay unlocked. Why go through the hassel when you can buy outright.

Any reasonable deals on newer models?

WHAT, I bought an iPhone SE through Tracfone a month ago and it got unlocked exactly after 2 months passed. Can you elaborate on what happened I am very curious
There were lots of screwups with the Walmart SE3 deal over the holidays.
Hard to turn down $49 (plus one 30 day plan) for SE3, but many had problems buying in store - could have been fault of WM or lack of store reps communication with Straight Talk. There's a long thread on SD.

Most of the refurb that i have purchased fron ST are usually customer returns most that look new and most had 8 or 9 months of apple warranty left, the single refurb i got from eBay came with a very worn battery and screen was scratched.

Considering this deal. The people in ST chat say the iphone reconditioned phones have no warranty contrary to the earlier post. I found the info below on the ST website.
IX. Limited Warranty

All new Straight Talk phones (except iPhones) are covered by a one (1) year limited warranty administered by Straight Talk as set forth below.

All reconditioned or refurbished phones sold by Straight Talk (except iPhones) have a ninety (90) day limited warranty as do all wireless accessories sold by Straight Talk.

New Apple iPhones are covered by a one-year limited warranty offered and administered by Apple. Please visit apple.com for more information.

To the extent available for purchase, refurbished iPhones and certified pre-owned phones are not covered by a limited warranty but may be returned for a refund within thirty (30) days of purchase.

Let's say I order one with $35 plan and upon receiving it I find it's not a great refurbished unit (significant battery wear or something) and assume I don't activate service in such a case, do I get free returns (including on the $35 plan)?

Or does ST swap with a different phone at least?

Highly unlikely that they refund your $35 plan

If you're buying these prepaid deals, know what you are getting yourself into.

In can go great and it can go bad.

I've purchased several refurb iPhone units from the prepaid carriers. I don't remember having an issue but some people do have issues in other threads.

Used iPhone 12's go for around $250-$300 on eBay. If you were just going to do all of this and switch, might as well just buy it on eBay.

Ebay has 270 +
But the plan is free
Not going through all the hassles of port in out
But for new customer
Its worth it.

Battery life on the iphone 12 is pretty bad and having 64 gb memory isn't so great. I wonder when we will see deals for the iphone 13 on TF providers or other prepaid providers (Cricket, Metro) ?

Just found a mint used 14 plus for $600. Gotta shop around. iPhone 11 is obsolete imho. And 12 is on its last year imho. My 14 plus will last me for 4-5 years.

Iphone 11 was released 4.5 years ago and 12 3.5, following your own logic of buying 1.5 years old phone to last another 4-5 years would also make it obsolete by your own statement, before that term passes. Sometimes people write things without thinking and iphone 11 with new battery is more than capable of doing 90% of what phone is supposed to be used for, 10% falling short would be high demand use like gaming and even that my kid is playing Xbox games online without much issue.
