are these any good for a little backyard plinking with the kiddo? would upgrading the spring help with range and accuracy (faster dart -- flatter trajectory)? and finally what are good third party darts for these?

Also interested if these are pretty solid or pretty trash. My Father in law buys his grandkids this kind of stuff all the time for basement wars and I'd love to show up with a powerhouse.

You could probably upgrade the spring and get better results, but I've found the quality on some of the large dart models to be a gamble. The darts are less forgiving if they get deformed at all so the jams take more patience to clear. Plus you can't reload by stealing the darts from others, you have to have your own set of darts.

I will always prefer the models that use the standard sized darts. The old Longstrike could be modified to get good range and dead accurate. Tuck a bb into the dart tip for a little extra weight and with an oversized magazine you could have a 20-shot sniper that could fire 50ft with good accuracy. That said, the plunger design on those was a limiting factor, so I don't know if this SR would be easier to modify.

I have one. And when it works it was pretty awesome. However if the darts get smashed or bent it doesn't work at all. I think it's a pretty cool toy but it just didn't work consistently enough for me to recommend it.

Bought for about the same price at a random Target clearance and it's a fun favorite in the house without need for modification. The Mega darts fly more consistently than the standard darts and whistle in the air as they fly. Get a box or two of imitation replacement darts on Amazon as they do get squished and deformed over time.
