Very strange. Why an HDD (not SSD) on a machine like this?

Is this machine generations old?

Given that HP cut corners by putting in a 500GB mechanical hard drive, it makes you wonder where else they cut corners on this particular model...

Many of the specs are nice but this is far less than the sum of its parts because a few key things let it down significantly. It doesn't have an SSD, only a small mechanical hard drive. And the LCD is a big 17.3" but a terrible resolution at 1080p for that size when you're so close to it. The RTX GPU is nice but doesn't come close to saving the whole package.

Yes. It's an 11th gen CPU too from early 2021 so it's 3 years old. Though an i9 should still have included an SSD way back then too.

Considering it's a refurb with only 16gb of RAM, a mechanical hard drive, and a mid-tier screen, this seems a little pricy.

It's like whoever ordered these things originally maxed out the CPU from what was available (and I think this CPU is pretty good , I have the i7 version and it's decent even 3 years later) and kind of made everything else mediocre or cheaped out.

It is hard to compare this kind of laptop (like a real pro workstation) vs a consumer or even prosumer one. These are gonna be WAY better built than your Dell G15, even a new one.

In the end I gave a TD because despite better build quality, the mediocre screen + 16GB RAM + 3060 equivalent + mechanical drive (wtf???) just isn't worth 799 as a refurb. 🤷 ♂️. If they had thrown in the better screen, or 32gb of ram; or the a4000, or hell, a 2TB nvme this would be at least ok. As it stands, naw.

You're absolutely right about the non-SSD, but you're incredibly wrong about the resolution. There is no issue with 1080p on ANY size laptop screen. Until they start making 27-inch laptops, 1080p is a perfectly fine resolution.

From the distance you'd be using a laptop 1080p is just far too low at 17"
At a distance of ~2ft the display would be considered "retina" but that's a bit too far for a laptop. It's not just text sharpness either, but overall desktop space. My current laptop is 13.3" and 1920x1200 and I'd consider that a bare minimum. Lowering the resolution further and putting it on an even larger display is fine for an entry level laptop but not one for $800. Particularly when 2K + screens are commonplace now at much lower price points. Check out any of the recent popular deals, 1920x1200 screens are abundant at <$500 even
