Im salvadoran, personally I think the beaches aren't anything special unless you're a surfer which was one of the things El Salvador was known for other than violence lol. But it's safe now. Just avoid the big hotels if you want something unique, I saw they opened a hotel with bungalows that seems really pretty, and another one that has a direct view to the Santa ana volcano. Food is great, salvadoran street food is unique IMO. Take the Ruta de las flores if you're interested in a food and scenic or cultural trip. Aside from pupusas i'd say try nuegados, yuca sancochada or yuca frita, riguas, pastelitos, hot chocolate, horchata (made with peanuts and other beans/nuts), panes con pavo/pollo, tamales, sopa de pata (cow feet), chorizo, longaniza, etc because there's a lot more.

I'm literally in San Salvador right now (took Avianca out of SFO). El Salvador is great, beautiful country and I haven't seen a single sketchy thing here. There are cops/military everywhere and guards that just talk to each other all day. The beaches are good and the water is warm. Took surf lessons at el tunco that I don't regret. Food is honestly decently expensive unless you eat papusas, yuca frita, or local cuisine from stands. Roads are in great condition compared to Costa Rica, but be careful about which rentals company you go with; the rental car I got has bald tires, one blinker that doesn't work, and is for sure a salvage title vehicle from the US complete with a CarMax sticker on the back. The best place I went was Lago de coatepeque which is super scenic. I also brought my parents (who were scared to go anywhere near central america) and they have loved every part of the trip (aside from the crazy driving). The seats on Avianca are somewhat uncomfortable; they are the thin padded seats like you see on spirit, not typical airline seats.

That is funny because El Salvador is now one of the most safest countries in the world. Even safer than most US cities.

Per the US Government, you may want to reconsider travel to El Salvador: https://travel.state.gov/content/...isory.html

Amazing what this country has done to make its citizens safer and lower crime, other countries need to take note.

How is El Salvador? Beaches? Food? Etc?

Been going to Costa Rica for years. Had a connection in San Salvador once and security patted everyone down before getting on the plane. It was bizarre. They really give the impression that it's unsafe.

I traveled to Burger King in the early 1990s to see credit cards in action and my life was changed. Take the trip!

Didn't El Salvador get rid of all of its gangs virtually overnight?

Been there many times, it is not safe, police doesn't dare show their face to patrol in the streets

We were in San Salvador over Thanksgiving. We felt very safe there. We travel internationally quite a bit so we know to always take the normal precautions like don't be flashy, don't carry a ton of cash, basically don't make yourself look like a fish out of water. I wouldn't hesitate to go again. The food is amazing. Our hotel was beautiful and we went along the coast quite a bit.
