I believed this too until I read a bit more into it. It's not so straight forward. While the absorption rate is lower, the larger amount of actual elemental magnesium in magnesium oxide (60%) vs magnesium citrate (11%) can nearly make up for the difference, for the same dose. Here's an interesting study for those who want to take a look: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/...MC5652077/

The magnesium oxide is the poorest form for absorption. Magnesium citrate is generally what you want.

Likewise, a product study by Kappeler et al. (2017) observed a slightly higher bioavailability of Mg2+ citrate as compared to Mg2+ oxide using 24-h urinary Mg2+ excretion as biomarker [116]. However, the difference in urinary Mg2+ levels between Mg2+ citrate (7.2±1.48 mmol) and Mg2+ oxide (6.7±1.43 mmol)-although statistically significant-is marginal

If you can get it, magnesium glycinate is even better.

I usually just go with citrate, though, since glycinate is usually way too expensive.

The whole thing is that you need a bunch more magnesium oxide to achieve the same amount. . So less taxing on your GI if you get glycinate or citrate, usually citrate comes in 100mg capsules suggest 1-4 times a day. Oxide usually comes in 400mg capsules, suggested 1-4 times a day.
