It's particularly useful if you have multiple accounts at multiple different banks. With software like Quicken, it lets you see all your accounts in one place, instead of having to log into every bank's website constantly.
You can also use it to create and maintain a budget, but that's not a feature I personally use.
(Not sure what you're getting at with the lobbying comment, though.)

I am also experimenting with gnucash and waveapps as free alternatives to paid subscription service.

(There are versions out there marked "new subscribers only" that will not work, but this one is fine to extend an existing subscription.)

As software goes, Quicken is buggy, slow and old code, and the subscription model is not very attractive to me. But it's the best in the business if you need the full feature set it has (downloading transactions from the banks, transfers between several different accounts, splitting expenses among multiple categories, etc.).
If you can get by with something more simple, there are lots of alternatives. Sorry, I can't name them, hopefully others will comment on the alternatives for simple situations.
