My two cents. Booked my family of 4 on spirit to Cancun last week. Flight was cancelled the night before. No explanation whatsoever. Next flight out with them was fully booked too, so we had to pay $$$ to book with another carrier same day. Still haven't even gotten our refunds yet.

Spirit is great when everything goes right. But when things go wrong as they inevitably do, you're farked.

next time just add the bag via the app. you can do that last minute, even once you've already checked in. it's cheaper.

Looks like Frontier in Atlanta is also matching some of the dates in addition to going beyond March 6.

Also Pro Tip: If you're able to purchase Spirit or Frontier tickets at the airport they will waive the online Passenger Usage Fee. It can vary per flight but it's usually $22 each ticket and per segment/layover.

So for example I had a flight from Atlanta to Seattle for $74. There was a layover in Las Vegas so that took an additional $22 off on top of the standard airport discount. In total I paid about $60 roundtrip.

One way deal - Spirit is expecting people to go there and don't come back 😝
Actually, after flying one way on Spirit, you won't want fly back with them anyway. 🙄

Who travels internationally without luggage? Unless you're in that small percentage, by the time you pay for baggage fees, you might be better off with another airline

We had same experience out of Costa Rica. They didn't say why the flight was canceled (apparently plane had icy conditions in Atlanta) . They make up reasons where they are not required to pay for Hotel, penalties etc. We booked on the following day flight same time and they cancelled that too again. We booked on Delta for 5X fare and flew home.

You can actually pack quite a lot in their personal item size. I'm usually able to fit a week's worth of clothes with a little bit of room to spare. If you need more than that you can also use a laundromat at your destination or wear your souvenir shirts.

A few days trip doesn't take more than what will fit in a small backpack for many people.

This is by far the biggest risk of any of the discount carriers at this bottom pricing tier unfortunately. Depends a lot on the brand and location how likely it is but you definitely want to have a contingency plan and not fly "just in time" to an expensive event/stay on them.
Don't think this is a risk for all, at least southwest manages to minimize cancellations but if they have to yeah they won't book you on the full fare ticket same day for sure.
Don't think any airline would.

Cancun is a dump. I took my family there last year for a nice, relaxing beach vacation and ended up getting extorted by the Cancun police.
Gotta stick to the resorts.

Went last summer and had no issues. Stayed on a resort though.

Flying back from Costa Rica once, we were in the checkin line and they cancelled the flight. Only explanation that the crew on the incoming flight ran out of their continuous working hours. Smilie. How does that even happen? Did they land and ask the crew, how long have you been working today?
This happened to me once on Southwest. They track when the pilots clock in and they legally can only have the pilots working for a certain amount of hours for safety reasons. In my case, got loaded on the plane at 8PM, found mechanical issues, unloaded everyone, loaded back on around midnight on different plane, discovered the pilots had timed out, flight cancelled. Everyone lined up at 1AM to rebook. It sucked.
