Patagonia seems to be going with the "they'll buy anything we put our brand name on, no matter how ridiculous it looks" train of thought. The sad part is, for most people, they're right.
You guys are cute. The pocket isn't really in a weird spot. Look at most jackets. There is a pocket in that exact spot. I think what is confusing you is that you see the pocket instead of it just being a zipper with a pocket liner hidden inside.

The reason the pocket is there is because it's ergonomic, good for outdoor activities, if the pocket is lower like those on most jackets, the backpack belt might block it. Also, eye-catching colors are to let people find you easier if you got lost in the wilderness. I would never wear it other than going to the woods though, metrosexually speaking, they are ugly as fark.
