I was about to purchase and noticed a few things that held me back:
1. No m.2 slot, only SSD. This is a significant bottleneck
2. No USB C connector
3. Only has wifi 5 (we are almost at wifi 7!)

Some other things that are normal but good to know for this price range, RAM is soldered on and the fan seems like it could be quieter.

For a few bucks more you can go with several other vendors that don't have the first 3 limitations noted above. I for one think the $20-$30 more could get you a better N100. I see why it's on sale.

I would argue that really only the USB-C thing is going to have any noticeable affect for a vast majority of people, and that calling the lack of an m.2 slot a "significant bottleneck" is incorrect.

During normal PC usage including boot and application start the bottleneck isn't SSD speed, it's seek latency, which is similar between PCIE ssds and even the very old now seeming SATA ssds. Difference in boot to windows is literally like two seconds.

Don't let the throughput numbers fool you. On that or the WiFi technology. WiFi 5 is totally fine for pretty much anything anyone would wanna do with this box. Don't be fooled into thinking you need stuff that you don't.

Can you list 1 of those other options you'd prefer?

It states and it is pictured that there is an m.2 slot.

There is also a pic in the reviews depicting a normal ram stick. Where did you see that it's soldered?

Can this do transcoding if used as a plex server?
Yeah the N100 is a good chip for transcoding. It's the similarly priced/specced Ryzen chips that struggle.

Ryzen chips are slightly better at other things, but really struggle transcoding.

Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank ducksoup18

I have this. Running debian just fine. Its a decent little computer that can handle plex/jellyfin but it is not completely silent under load so if you're using it for a htpc or something near a TV be aware.

Is the BIOS clean or hard-coded with certain "features?"
The BIOS isn't what you need to worry about. It's little hidden things in the OS. (I.e. stupid nonsense like the default search engine being changed to one that injects ads to make the manufacturer a few extra bucks)

So the first thing I recommend anyone does is immediately wipe it and install a fresh OS. Because if they're gonna to do tacky code changes like that, who knows what else they'll do?

Makes you wonder considering the latest news on the fbi and routers.

Does this have OS? When I read the description for OS it just says OS.

I'm blown away by how powerful these cheap n100 chips are. I've seen benchmarks putting them on par with a i7-6700 intel chip, but with better iGPUs.

Seems perfectly fine for office tasks and watching videos.

Are these "low power"? I'm looking for something for a plex server that doesn't require a constant heavy power draw. Is this the same thing as a NUC?

Pretty low consumption. Comparable to Nucs i believe.

I have wifi 6 router with some wifi 6 devices. I don't notice a difference. People like to be anal about specs but realistically speaking, do they even matter. What is someone doing with a mini pc like this that will max out their wifi or ssd speeds?

I have a mini pc from a different brand and it's running my docker and home assistant server. Even with a dozen services it doesn't struggle a bit, and I have never felt like I should have spent $30 or $50 more and got the "better" model.

Yes, they are. The N100 and N95. I have a similar PC running Plex just fine. Unless you're steaming 80 gb blue ray files you should be fine with any of these N100 or 95 PCs.

Yep. I echo your thoughts. That comment is the equivalent of saying don't buy the Honda but the BMW because the Honda will only go 120 mph when you live in a place where 120 mph would be considered reckless driving and could get your license revoked.

N series does not support dual-channel RAM access, right? How much does that translate into real world performance compared to dual channel?
