My son is doing some CAD things (Fusion 360) in school, and his old thinkpad is too slow. I'm looking at this now, but wondering about the FP Lenovo Legion 5 15.6" deal from Walmart. Will this be a better performer than the FP deal WQHD 165Hz Gaming Laptop AMD Ryzen 7 7735H 16GB RAM 512GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 8GB?

I have this laptop and before that, had the prior gen 7620 with the RTX 3060.

I did have the touchpad issue with the 7620, but never had a problem with hinges.

As for this one, it's designed for creators and I use it primarily for work but I do some gaming on the side and the 4060 is speedy enough although a bit noisy under full load. I do miss having a num pad. When I first got the laptop there was an issue where shutting down the computer wouldn't actually shut it down and I had a dead battery the next morning when I pulled it out of my bag. Very annoying. Fortunately that went away after a later firmware update. No touch pad or hinge issues as of yet. This is a great deal, especially if you take the time to get the 10% coupon.

FWIW, Dell lists the 4060 TDP as 60w but the Nvidia Control panel says "Maximum Graphics Power 70 W".

Display is also 120Hz by the way. Dell does not mention it in the product page directly, not sure why. Check the below review

There was a deal recently for a Dell Inspiron with 120Hz display. After receiving it, it shows it is a 120Hz display but to be honest, it didn't look like it. I switched back and forth from 60 to 120 and could hardly tell the difference. Despite refresh rate, I think the display itself is just slow (high latency).

Not sure I'd gamble on any Inspiron's making it more than a couple of years without a structural problem based on what I see online. I'd probably be looking at Lenovo or ASUS instead right now, but I have that $200/semester amex biz credit with Dell to burn.

I would steer clear from Lenovo. Mine also has hinges that broke within 2 years

an almost perfect laptop (decent cpu, great amount of disk and ram, wifi6e, decent gpu, 1080p webcam, 2.5K resolution) ruined by terrible decisions made on the keyboard. not only it doesn't have a numeric keypad, but some important keys are hidden within the fn keys. all that wasted empty space, they could have added a lot of keys.

if you don't care about the keyboard then by all means get this
ugh damn why is it so hard to find 32gb with a numpad, 32gb is hard enough to get, but yea with the size it's just wasted space! oh well the search continues

The Inspiron 3530 has a num pad and has DIMM sockets so you can put your own 32GB in there.

thanks for the tip but this one appears to be limited to 1080p -- I have a laundry list of things for my next laptop, and 32gb/numpad is definitely one, so thanks for sharing this, but I gotta have at least somethingx1200+ resolution, 1080p just wont cut it

but thanks!

Great find - Thanks OP. Had 120 off on my Delta Amex card. Made it sweet deal. Had bought the HP 2 in 1 from Costco last week for 899 for its 32GB RAM and 1TB SSD, but was looking for a DDR5 RAM. Does not have touchscreen or 2 in 1- but I rarely use that

Thanks for finding this about the refresh rate! I see that the Time Spy was 8,240, so if you're looking for heavy gaming, esp. at native resolution, this isn't the machine. But that's not too shabby for a thin productivity laptop.

It's also only 300 nits, which--again--is perfectly fine but at $1k you can find (and probably should expect) brighter options. 9.5 hours of mixed-usage in their battery run test is also quite good. Seems like a decent deal at $1k and would be an amazing deal at ~$700-800 if/when it ends up refurbished on fleaBay.

I've had the 7506 for a few years now and I want to love it, but it has never been reliable and constantly gives me a Blue Screen of Death. It's pretty much guaranteed every time I use it and I have no idea what the cause is since I'm never running anything heavy. I remember doing a quick search and finding out that problem is somewhat widespread, but I never found a solution. I'm not sure why I didn't return it in the beginning, but I don't really use it every day and now it's too late to do anything.

Other than that, my only issue with it is the fan randomly spinning up loudly, and I have wasted too much time trying to figure out what causes that.

You reminded me that I also have the touchpad issue, but I forget because I always use a mouse. I haven't had any hinge issues, but that's probably because I haven't used mine as much as others normally would.

And I've also been opening it up to a dead battery a few times lately, which is really annoying.

I would absolutely love my 2n1 laptop if it wasn't for these issues, but the BSoD is just too much to endure. I decided a while ago that I won't be buying another Dell. You didn't mention anything about BSoD happening with your laptops, but the other issues tell me that staying away from Dell is still the right decision for me.

I'm just gonna keep using it for now, but I'm pretty sure my next one will either be an LG Gram or a Framework.

ALL brands have various models with this problem. Some models are good, some not so much and failures on one model are not indicative of future failures on new models because the hinge and hinge mount designs are always different. Looks the the 7610 and 7630 have different hinges, palmrest and LCD back cover so no way to know how this model will perform. That said, larger screens need stiffer clutches and put more leverage on the hinges, which makes them more likely to fail if they aren't properly designed.
