These really need significant amounts of direct light... they're tropical plants. So south-facing views ideally.
Don't spread lies! It's mildly toxic to cats and won't kill them. It causes diarrhea, vomiting and nausea. The flower and seeds are extremely toxic - not an issue most times because these will never flower in a home or produce seeds.
I have over 130 house plants, 70% are "toxic" to cats. My 5 cats leave them alone mostly but sometimes out of the blue they may chew on one. Will they throw up? Yup! Will they mess with it again, typically no.
If you don't want your animals throwing up or having a bad bowel movement, don't have houseplants.
Arrived today for me. Soil is completely wet, leaves are all drooping, yellowed soft edges and cut in half vertically to some degree. Bottom half is all brown with brown spots that seems to travel upwards. Over the maximum 10 from my moisture meter. Luck of the draw not on my side.
Took a week to ship / get to NY.
Can't return or replace the item, so I may be eventually out $30 if it can't be saved.
Cut out as much mushy roots as I could and replaced the soil with cacti soil (all I have) until the existing soil dries out to reuse it. Hopefully it can be saved.

Which is why you should never mail order any plant.
Go to a local nursery or even big box store and buy a thing you can see first.
Lots of pretty bad 1 star reviews about how the plants arrived. I always get suspicious when the 1 star reviews are out of line with the rest. I discount 5 star reviews by about 30 to 50 percent, so if the 1 star reviews are abnormally out of line, it gives me pause. You could get one in good shape, but it looks like you're taking your chances.
Mine arrived yesterday and the top of the box was partially open. Some of the soil had come out off the pot (wrapped with plastic wrap to keep soil in). Overall I was surprised how well it traveled. I was disappointed with the planter, silly me thought it was ceramic, it was plastic.

At least you got the planter. Mine arrived with only the nursery pot and a bunch of split leaves.

Exactly! There is a very big difference between death and upset stomach. Also, if you have pets, and you already have some plants in the house, you should already know if your pets are interested in plants or not. I probably have around 100 plants (many small, but a couple big ones as well) and my dog is not interested in them at all. I keep most elevated on window sills, shelves or in glass cabinets, but there are some that she could technically reach and she has never shown any interest in them, so I can buy any kind of plant. So know your pet!
Wrt the question about flowers and seeds - if the plant does start to bloom, you can cut off the bud before it turns into a flower. But keep in mind this is a very big plant. It can very easily and rapidly grow to 6-8ft, and I Imagine the flower will be high up. When it comes to tropicals blooming in the house, from the plants that I have, the ones that bloom often are the ones advertised to do so - phalaenopsis orchids and anthurium andreanum. Apart from that, most alocasia seem to bloom quite easily, and also marantha, hoya and peperomia species. Some succulents occasionally bloom for me, and that's about it. If you want seeds, you need to figure out how to pollinate it, and some plants cannot be self polinated because the male and female parts of the flower are not active at the same time. So seeds might not be much of a concern.

Strelitzia is the botanical name of bird of paradise. I have an orange one. Pretty easy to grow.
