I would seriously advise against the split-ring version. The split ring portion is just too wide and thick to be useful for freshwater sized split rings. If you're fishing for 500 pound Goliath grouper, maybe?
The split ring pliers like these just get in the way of using the plier functionality. If you need split ring pliers, get a pair that is designed for just that task. You want thin and narrow and I prefer that the point close against the bottom jaw, not extend past it. You don't get as much of an opening in the split ring, but you also don't have to put them in the perfect angle to engage the split ring.
The lip grips are fine for most any freshwater game fish, but aren't as large of a jaw opening as you may want for saltwater fish with very bony and teethy mouths.
If you want a buy once, cry once pair of pliers, I like Danco pliers. However, I probably have 10 pairs of fishing pliers and can lay my hands on 2 or 3 without searching for a while.
