Oil report does not detect the minute uneven wear at the cylinder bore! Manufacturer spec longer oil change interval because they want to remain competitive when it comes to the cost of operation. But when the ODO hits +100K miles and the engine is out of warranty, you will see the waste $ spend on oil analysis.

This is a common problem will modern engines that use low-tension rings to improve fuel mileage. Companies must pay a penalty to the US government if they don't meet Corporate Average Fuel Economy numbers. 5W30 oil protect better at +50F ambient, but it also reduces the CAFE number. That's the main reason for pushing 0W16 or 0W20. Often, the same engine sold in Africa will specify 5W30 (no CAFE penalty).

Yeah. I see that thing about oil type. For my 23 vehicle, 5-20W is recommended in AUS and CA but 0w-16 in the US. I thought it was strange because car manufacturers don't have time to do that

I had purchased from Walmart.com with that Oil + free twin shop towel rolls deal twice in past and had no issues getting rebate, just that it comes late. People forget Walmart instore now price matches with walmart.com unlike in past when they price matched surrounding stores but never with Walmart.com which was weird.

Correction I just realized in past my 1 submitted rebate wasnt showing up in their system
after 5 weeks (Their time frame to receive was 4 weeks then). The rude lady hung up saying cant find and wait upto 8 weeks if I am lucky and shows up.

Benefit is they will sell you a new car after 100K miles. Annual cost of operation is a big deal for some buyers. Toyota's marketing don't want to see 5K oil change when the competitors are pushing 10K. You buy a new car or pay thousands to repair that engine when it goes south after 100K miles.

Oil manufacturers are not interested in lawsuits. Therefore, they all recommend the user to follow the manufacturer's recommendation. If the manufacturers provide 200K miles engine warranty, then they will spec 5K oil change interval.

I've seen V-6 Hondas with cylinder activation burning oil due to thermal imbalance resulting in uneven cylinder bore wear. Older Toyotas have maintenance light that come on at 5000 miles. These engines don't have excessive oil consumption due to sticking piston ring. 5K oil change allows many older Corollas to run 300-400K miles with conventional 5W-30 oil.

BTW, automotive engineers aren't the sharpest bunch. The bean counters control what you see at the showroom. Wonder why Ford and GM abandon passenger cars? And why the quality of Hondas have tanked over the last decade?

Fine. So tell me why oil companies also agree with the Car manufacturers? Wouldn't they want to make more money by selling more oil.

I only ask you to use common sense.

Oil companies and Car manufacturers have the best testing equipment in the world.

Now you can believe some guy on YouTube or some local mechanic if you want. It's your money.

Last thing is this oil change debate has been going on for over 29 years and yet NOT ONE STUDY has shown that changing your oil at manufacturers recommend intervals damages the engine.

If you have one then I would love to read it.

There is a story circulating the web that modern engines have tighter spec, and thus, require thinner oil. Engine tolerances are determined by engine load and wear. A new engine will polish itself to nominal operating clearance. As the miles build up, the operating clearance will increase.

A well designed engine will have good oil pressure and mass flow rate at 300-400K miles. Extended oil change interval will result in excessive deposit inside the oil passage, thus lowering the oil mass flow rate.

Like every thing in the USA, just follow the $ trail!

Again where are the millions of cars in the junkyards with engine damage? I personally had a Honda Accord that had over 250k before I had to get rid of it because of rust.

How is that possible if I change it's oil at the manufacturers recommend intervals?

Like I say spend your money any way you want. I'll use mine for more enjoyment.
