Is this basically the perfect laptop right now? Has the ram, 1TB is good enough, 4080, and screen is great. Any downsides to this? I know the MSI doesn't have g-sync

Intel Ultra is here...so this CPU series is outdated. 1TB SSD is a joke for the price. There's no new Nvidia series, but maybe we'll see a 40 Super for mobile in the future. I'd like for ram to be 64GB.
Intel Ultra 9 185H is not the successor of 13900HX/14900HX. Thread count is 22 vs 32, and Ultra is targeting more portable laptops while HX is for performance laptops.

The 13900HX/14900HX has 50%-75% higher score in Cinebench Multicore than Intel Ultra 9 185H, and is also much more power hungry and runs hotter. Hence totally two different product lines.

How big of a deal is that? Is it expected to be higher for a laptop with a 4080?

Yeah, all 4080's are only 12GB, but I can't justify the $600 difference to the 4090. 4080 12GB should be sufficient at native resolutions. If you're going to use a 4k external monitor etc then the 4090 could be the move. But $600 is still a steep jump. 4080 is the sweet spot for now, for me anyway.

I've had this since day 1 and only use as a desktop replacement. I only game at 1440p and nothing even makes this sweat... Except random updates that make the fans go crazy once in a while. I know the specs are overkill, but I wanted my $2300 last for a good long while and I didn't want the fans blasting off while I play. 12gb of VRAM is plenty for me and nothing even comes close to using all of it.

Some Pros:
1. It had the fastest ram of all the released 13th gen laptops at the time... 5600mt/s. It was advertised as being able to use 6000mt/s, but there weren't any ram that fast at the time.
2. You can undervolt with XTU or ThrottleStop.
3. You Overclock the CPU and GPU with the Legion Vantage software.
4. The cooling system is very good and can "go" when you need it to, espescially for how small the laptop is compared to the competition.

One Con:
1. It's kind of hard to open, but you won't be doing it that often.
People like to complain that this version lost a lot of bells and whistles from the previous model, but I don't care about any of that. This isn't a laptop that I'm carrying around anyways. I've got a smaller laptop for travel, school and work.

All jokes aside, this is a phenominal laptop.

Legion Pro 7i is probably the best value for a high-ish end performance laptop. But make sure you are looking for a 6+ lbs performance laptop (and 7+ lbs with that fat charger).

If you use a smaller laptop for when you're out and about and are using this solely as a desktop replacement, then why not just spend that same money on a desktop which could run circles around this laptop?

After a RAM stick went bad last week, I'd been eyeballing this one since about Tuesday.

EXTRA5 was dead, and the welcome codes wouldn't work. I got it down to 1958 after affinity/employer discounts, before taxes and purple cash back. Looks like B&H has it for $2099, too.

It's not much differently sized than my current laptop, but I will miss the physical mouse buttons and the touch screen. It's a dell refurb and I've been stubbornly limping it along since I had it.

Otherwise it seems like it will fit my typical ~$2k desktop replacement, and now I can play more games!

Now to hope my current laptop holds out for the next two weeks.

Wow! I didn't know the gap was that huge. I thought the 7940HS in my laptop was high end, but it's behind these HX processors. Frown

Good point, but laptops are much smaller, use way less power and generate less heat. I've been using laptops, instead of desktops, for ages and I'm not going back. Plus, if I have a power outage, the battery will keep my laptop from crashing and losing my work. Yes, I know about UPS, but those also take up way more space. And thirdly, I can take my laptop anywhere, if needed.
