The 770 lacks Dram and is more of a midrange storage option.
The SN770 isn't a bad drive, and it's more recent than the 980 Pro, but overall given similar prices I'd pick the 980 pro. The 980 pro has dram where the sn770 does not, plus I believe the 980 pro comes with a heatsink included. Can't really go wrong with either of them though.
I'll have to disagree. I don't see similar prices right now, and that's important since SSD costs have risen. The last time there was a comparable deal for the 980 Pro was during Black Friday almost 3 months ago.

Personally I'd save the $60 even if I'd lose DRAM.

edit: Did some more research. This SSD like other DRAM-less options has an HMB to mitigate the lack of cache by using system RAM instead. Reviews are pretty solid.

980 Pro also has a required firmware update if you don't want it to fail, but this older issue should be resolved by now.

edit 2: All new 980 Pros from BB will very likely come with updated firmware. Unfortunately they are still quite a bit more expensive than this drive.

Anyone think this would be an ok upgrade for a ROG Ally?
I've got the L bracket for a larger M.2 but not sure if this would be an adequate replacement for the stock 512 GB.

Real world feel. You can not tell the difference between say 4000 mb per s. Vs say 7000 MB per s.

The SSD can outperform any speeds thunderbolt/usb 4.0 is even capable of. I'm just using it for external storage.
