I like your advice, except it is outdated. There are a new class of soldering irons that are revolutionary. I have been soldering for over 50 years, so I would not say that unless I meant it. I have a Pinecil and I highly recommend you try it. I have been using a Weller and Hakko otherwise for the last 50 years and completely moved over to the Pinecil.
Wholesome advice in this thread
I have a pinecil too and I recommend it. I use it over my Weller 99% of the time.

I read that as "pencil" both times….

Likely worth it for the rework air gun but not a killer deal. I have a similarly cheap setup. The iron on mine is poor. It's power adjustable but not temperature regulated (no thermistor in the tip). Since I bought it for the air gun and already own proper irons that's not a big issue for me.

Hot air rework stations are really nice to have if you ever need to remove a soldered part or if you want to shrink some heat shrink tubing.

I agree with others that the traditional Hakko or Weller stations or the newer Pinecil, ts-100 etc irons are also great options and almost certainly better than this.

So, decent deal for the air gun. Probably not a good iron.

The penicil has replaced the bench irons due to its size and portability, especially for going on site. However, I would assume the main draw here is the hot air. Hot air rework is for a different scenario, where you need multiple pins to be loosened to life the part up at once unless you're really fast with an iron and wicking the solder beforehand. Or loosening the pad under the IC.

I'm unsure of the longevity of my penicil, due to the connection and weight of the cable on usbc port, i wish the dc barrel had some threads for a more permanent station setup. I haven't used it enough to know if it will be a problem.

I don't really have big concerns with the iron on this (haven't used it yet), skill and the correct tip generally dictates how good the work is, and the iron difference is generally how fast it heats up, which is a non issue once it has reached temp, the Metcals just heat instantly which is nice.

I don't have any experience with this particular model and it might be okay for light use. But generally speaking I recommend avoiding cheap soldering irons and just go for a Hakko or a Weller.

If you look at the 1, 2 and 3 star reviews of this and the same model from other sellers, it is clear that the iron sucks. The hot air gun apparently works well though. I might get it just for that.

How is the hot air on this? Most hot air alone cost more than this combo, surely it can't be of any quality?
cheap turbine in this one.
Of course, if 2 for $30 - cheap "quality", no miracles.

Any links for the Penicil (full kit - only seeing the mini portable on Amazon) and I assume the ST101 a new worthy upgrade for TS100? ...again, the TS101 tops the list on Amazon
Thanks in advance

Is the Pinecil similar to the ts-100?
Yes, but the pinecil is cheap. (like $26 or something) The current version has BLE and someone even wrote a web page that you can open and connect to your pinecil and see realtime power usage and tip temp. (totally not needed at all but cool still)
I prefer the pinecil mainly because I like pine64 mission and want to support that. It s fun little soldering iron and you can fork the OS it comes with off github and add your own improvements if you want.
I know the pinecil has long and short tips that you can get and works with the ts100 tips. I am not sure how the short tips would fair on a ts-100 though with the different resistance in the tip. (pretty sure the OS on the pinecil senses the tip and heats it accordingly based on if it is a short or long tip. )
The TS-100 could run IronOS (default OS for the pinecil) but some of the manufacturers are using cloned STM32 chips that have a hard time loading IronOS so it is no longer recommended. If you want to run IronOS with all its features Pinecil is the way to go.
I have been using mine for over a year now and highly recommend. It works great with my 60W+ USB C chargers and I even bought a powerbank that does upto a 100W out (so I can use it with my laptop) and it works great on that. I have not tired the barrel jack which is supposed to squeeze a little more power out but I have never had an issue with the usb C not getting hot enough.
There are also poeple that have made mods for the pinecil. my favorite is a little light ring that goes on by the tip and you can solder it onto the pinecil's pcb to light up your project.
TL;DR; similar but, in my opinion the pinecil is cheaper and better.

https://pine64.com/product-category/pinecil/ you can a set of normal tip and then it is not so mini. In my searching the pine64 tips were about as good of a deal as I could find outside aliexpress. I like what pine64 stands for and $3.99 was cheap for a usb C cable... I really like the silicone usb C cable. It resists a little heat if you would accidentally get it close to the hot end and it is super flexible and stays out of the way so I haven't had an issue with it twisting over onto the tip.
