Add the 'free' battery (top right of listing screen) and you get the sander and battery for $159. This prorates the items at $65.16 for the sander and $93,84 for the battery. If you don't want both items, you can return one and keep the other at the prorated price.

You answered the question in a helpful way. Why the down votes?

It's a "The first rule of Fight Club is: you do not talk about Fight Club" kind of thing. Also see rule 2.

There are thousands of posts about this hack over at least a decade. I think the cats out of the bag.

I have the old corded sander and it has been a work horse for me. I have replaced the brushes and also replaced the cord that began to crack. I recently purchased the 20V one and I like the variable speed and I think it is a little better balanced than the electric one. Also I never have had to replace the pad on the sander and I have read that the new ones might need replacing from time to time. Also the method of attaching the paper is different and some have stated the new one sometimes have the paper hold down break. But for the time this tool saves...it is well worth the investment. For my old sander, I have built cabinets, outdoor furniture, table tops for sit/stand desks, used it to shape wood, blend side molding into a table top, etc. My wife has used it for her crafts. I once used it to knock down dry wall compound, but that was a big mistake, get a screen. After my drill/driver, I use this or my compound miter saw the most.

This one seems well built, but the battery on the back does take some getting used to.

This seems like a pretty nice deal.

But fwiw I just went down the rabbit hole and the gist is most people tend to prefer the random orbital sander over this one for being easier to change sheets, leaving less marks, easier on the body, sanding faster at low grit, and just generally being more versatile for different use cases.

This one seems to be mostly recommended specifically for finishing sanding (paint, etc) because sheets will gum up fast and it's cheaper to replace plain sheets than the velcro ones needed for the ROS sander. Also obviously better for corners due to the square shape.

But most people who have both seem to say they rarely go for this one.

But this tool doesn't come with a battery included right ?
So if you return the "free" battery, you cannot use it ?

FYI, I just got this deal last night and returned the battery at the same time I picked it up.

I asked the lady at customer service if it was a problem to do the return since the battery and tool combo gave me such a good price on the sander.

She replied with "Sweetie, Home Depot is still making plenty of money off the deal, at least somewhere along the line, or this computer, pointing to the register, wouldn't allow me to do the return for you in the first place."

Which if you think about it, of course they are, because even after the battery return, if Home Depot wasn't still coming out ahead on the deal, this "battery hack" thing would've been shutdown after the first time a sizable amount of customers took advantage of the "hack".

Any amount of guilt one might feel for taking advantage of returning the battery means that Home Depot has been successful at marketing the "perceived value" for the battery packs during a typical sale.

Dewalt is pushing these power tack batteries. I got into Milwaukee and now Dewalt is crushing it with deals and more affordable battery pouch tech.

Remember an important part of the equation is the free gift is provided by the manufacturer. If you return a free battery, then HD can sell it at full price. If you return the main item and keep the free battery, then HD still keeps some of your money and you keep a battery they didn't pay for. HD are definitely not the losers in any of these scenarios.

Thank you very much. Great deal. I have used 18v MAX XR all my life and so wasn't interested in making a transition to 20v but I guess you have to start somewhere. Now where can I find a charger…

It's a bad sign that I don't know if I've already bought this, right?
