Is there a Fee if you have investments, interest or dividend returns? (1099s). I already started on TurboTax but want to switch over to CK if its free. When i tree, it intelligently detects i have data in TurboTax and stupidly asks if i want to clean up and start from scratch in CK. What nonsense? why cant Intuit import the data over Frown

I've been filing with Cash App Tax for the past 2 years when Credit Karma sold their tax to them. Everything was included for free and no time limit.

Last year was annoying because they took a while to get the CA state return going but this year everything was done quickly.

FreeTaxUSA does participate in the IRS Free File program [irs.gov], with free state filing for all states, but only if your AGI is $45,000 or less. TurboTax and H&R Block TaxCut quit the IRS program a couple of years ago because they weren't allowed to upsell paid services.
FreeTaxUSA is still free for federal regardless of income, but they do charge $15 for state e-file. Some people directly file with their state for free instead of paying that $15. Or use Cash App taxes if it does what you need (it does for most people). FreeTaxUSA is a little more complete than Cash App.

FreeTaxUSA charges $14.99 for a State Return. Online Taxes only charges $9.95 for a state return. It gets 4.8 out of 5-star reviews.. They guarantee their calculations are 100% accurate!!

For all people who use FreeTaxUsa or CK or CashApp or any other free or low cost tax preparation software, do you have 1099 forms with 100's of stock trading and options trading? If yes, does any of these online softwares connect to the brokerage and get the data automatically? Or do they allow for upload of these 1099 forms and they can read a PDF file for these transactions?

The only thing holding me back onto TT or HRBlock is because I cannot enter 100's of these items, cost basis, profit, loss, long term, short term basis, etc. manually. I would ditch any of these behemoths if the free ones could connect to the brokerage and banks.

It's official and backed by the gov. It totally does sound scammy AF though, I had to double check the first time I heard about it. Caveat is that it is only free for Federal taxes. Most tax services has extra charge for State taxes filing. I think there's some limits too, if your tax situation is a bit more complex it might not cover.

We should be able to check our returns without actually filing it with freetaxusa.. Right? Isn't TurboTax supposed to be like that where we could enter all the details on the website and check where we stand on the return? I thought payment should be required only if we decide to file with any of these services. Confused why people by the Turbo Tax software from Costco or anywhere else.

Sorry, I have been doing my taxes with a CPA for long time. Thought of saving some money this year by using online service as my tax situation is simple.

What about people who invest in the stock market? Would it be free as well? I really hate to pay in order to pay more

Moved to monarch for personal and rocket for biz. The era of free is over but my experience on these 2 have mostly filled the gap. Way better than the data harvesting app CK is.

Intuit, H&R Block and others lobby the Congress to defund IRS as much as possible so that they will not be able to audit lesser crooks who pay barely anything in taxes. And then you wonder why your taxes are high.

My recollection is that most free services specifically exclude returns with trading and other more complex needs.

I probably wouldn't trust something that complex to a free service anyway.

Of course, I probably wouldn't trust a CPA, either, given that the only time I ever hired one they made several easy to spot mistakes and would've cost me much more in taxes if I had trusted them, so... every option sucks, I guess, lol!

It's not about trust, I can very well do my taxes by following the instructions on each form. For people who don't know/care each tax form has detailed instructions on what numbers to enter in each of the fields.

What I don't like is the data entry of hundreds of records. I would rather pay a tax service $50 just for making that part easy. So I guess I'm stuck with TT for a while then.

Not tax advice and not an accountant and not a lawyer - but my understanding is that you can use a "various" line item for each of your long-term and short-term gains to document your proceeds. No need for each trade to be its own line item.

What used to be Credit Karma tax (free) is now Cash App tax (still free for most cases )

https://www.finsmes.com/2020/11/s...h-app.html [finsmes.com]

I do my taxes in both turbo tax and cash app to make sure totals match up within a dollar (since Turbo tax catches some situations and tax cuts better) then submit for free with cash app once satisfied.

turbo tax only makes you pay when ready to submit or preview forms. it shows your obligations, etc for free.
I do this too. My taxes are more complicated than most because I'm self-employed. TT did worse than free CreditKarma tax filing the last few years I did it. (NOTE THAT CREDITKARMA SOLD THEIR TAX PLATFORM TO CASHAPP. Intuit/TurboTax bought CK two years ago and were required to divest the free tax filing product as part of the sale. So, hilariously, this is now TurboTax "free" and CreditKarma's taxes (which were better than TT) are now CashApp taxes (free).

I echo the CPA's note - TT sucks and Intuit is a horrible company. TT has been slapped around by the government repeatedly for misleading marketing and other issues.
