First they should adjust to the new environment, then soil. Most plants will be shocked if too many changes that can caused them to die

I've noticed since my two kids have been teenagers and staying in their rooms more, my wife has bought more plants for the house. Every window has Plants now. Also plants at the dinner table is kinda weird in my opinion. Anyways, one kid is now away in college and the other will leave for college this August. I think she will suffer from becoming an empty nester and will buy even more plants. Is this normal and expected?

Yes. It could also lead to the addition of multiple pets and/or a new spouse.

Don't recommend if you have highly prized plants or if you care about keeping your area clean . They were filled with gnats and mealybugs. Instantly went into the trash.

If they are fungus gnats, they are easily dealt with using Mosquito Dunks that contain Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis. No need for chemical insecticides or soaps. Crumble parts of mosquito dunks into a watering jug and let it sit for an hour or two before watering the plants. Do this every time you water for a couple weeks. It won't kill the adult gnats but it will kill all their larvae in the soil, stopping the reproductive cycle. The adults should all die off within the same time frame due to their life span. One mosquito dunk should be enough to treat water for multiple plants and get rid of fungus gnat problems for good.

Mosquito dunks can be safely used to deal with fungus gnats indoors or outdoors. It will not harm any other insect or animal, because BTI it is a very specialized bacteria that only affects fungus gnat and mosquito larvae.

As a mom with an 18, 16 and 15 year old, yes. My mom friends and I have growing houseplant collections and you're likely onto something there.

Also can confirm. 2 dogs, 2 cats 3 fancy dwarf rats and now I'm looking at creating a small outdoor water feature with fish.

I prefer the plants by costa farms on Amazon, I've still got them going and I got them 3 years ago!

This seller is amazons version of costa farms, so a little cheaper but reviews aren't as good.

This is a pretty average price for 4" plants. Especially if you consider how common they are. If they were a very specific variety of a common aralia or dracaena then it might be a good buy.

calathea orbifolia is not an easy plant to care for. croton requires very high light, you can see it planted in the open in hawaii. it will wilt and die a slow death in the house. waffle plant and nerve plants (fittonia) require very consistent watering, they react poorly to lack of water, but the good thing is that they can take lower light. the other plants are ok.

if you get fungus gnats in the soil, don't panic. they are not damaging the plant, so you can take your time treating the plant. It usually means that the soil stays to soggy for too long. When you bring new plants home, treat them with an insecticidal soap for some weeks and keep them away from other plants if possible, When they acclimate, you can repot them in higher quality soil. Miracle gro is not the best, but if that is all you can find at the local garden center, also buy some perlite or pumice and perhaps some orchid bark and make a mix of perhaps 2/3 soil with 1/3 perlite or pumice and add some bark in there and repot the plant. This way you will get rid of the fungus gnats in the soil and you will now have soil that is fluffier and more aerated and dries faster, so you don't create those conditions for the gnats to come back. You basically want to have multiple particle sizes in your mix. Yellow traps can be put in the pot, you can lay them down horizontally, the gnats will stick to them and die.

Try putting sand on top of the soil to get rid of the gnats. It will fool the gnats into thinking the soil is dry and they won't lay eggs. The sticky yellow paper helps but won't solve the problem. You may have to put sand on top of all of your house plants.

Apple cider vinegar and a drop of dish soap in a small jar, place some clear/cling wrap on the top and poke small holes into the top so they can crawl in.
