There is a misconception that all dental treats are supposed to mechanically scrape all the tartar and plaque off your dogs teeth. While it may scrape some, it does not scrape all. More realistically, these dental chews help prevent the formation of more by scrape off the biofilm that is on the teeth. VOHC approved products are more likely to be effective given the testing they have to go through. Depending on the shape, some chews are specifically designed to be bitten into so that the chew surrounds the tooth up to the gum line, this is why some are made with flour/starch ingredients to act as binders for the fibrous ingredients. Some chews have ingredients that are meant to be ingested to work on a systemic level to prevent the formation of more plaque & tartar. Overly hard chews, like bones/antlers etc, may potentially scrape off build up but it's more likely to cause slab fractures and there are few studies that show these as beneficial for oral health (van Veggel et al 2018, Pinto CFD et al 2020). Despite what people think, canine teeth are weaker than human teeth. Their teeth are designed for shredding and tearing not necessarily heavy grinding and crushing. In addition, these harder chews act like sandpaper wearing down the enamel causing other dental issues.

You're right in that generally these are only meant to be in addition to daily brushing. No method of cleaning teeth at home is better than daily brushing.
whoa best response ive seen to my mindless post ive ever seen in my time at SD. thanks for the info. learned something.

The coupons may be YMMV. I don't have either of them. I have bought these treats before, most recently in December, so they may think I don't need any extra coupon convincing…

Same .. bought them in November and didn't qualify. Oh well, dog had enough healthy treats, but he does like these occasionally (bc I won't give it to him regularly!)

51 Count Variety Large is $21.84. Can't replicate 2 boxes for $24.18 with the Buy One Get 50% as the $5/$8 off doesn't apply.
