Wow, this is insane. Let me just start out by saying RAID is not a backup and you need to backup both new and refurbished drives.

$6.83 per GB may be an all-time low.

2018 model. These will definitely have 5+ years powered on. Pass.

Ultrastar HC550 (2020) and HC560 (2021) drives are worthwhile. The HC570s are too new and they dont have refurbs yet.

I highly doubt those are new. How do they know they have 0 bad sectors if they weren't recovered and tested?

yeah but it's seagate so now you need to buy another drive to backup the seagate because it's definitely going to fail

Can you reallllllly trust refurbed HDD tho?
Just as much as you can trust new ones. Which is to say no, you cannot. You *MUST* have backups of any critical data. Refurbished drives just let you do that significantly cheaper. They also let you create redundancy of your data, so you can avoid going to a backup on a drive failure.

Although I just realized it's Seagate which I've only had issue with that brand over the years. Guess the warranty will save me…………..

Nowadays Seagate is the same as all the others especially if comparing enterprise drives to enterprise drives.

I can relate to what you are saying. Back in the mid to late 80's I used to refurbish hard drives at a company that Seagate bought out. I knew how to troubleshoot down to the component level but some techs had no clue and would merely remove and replace the most expensive chip and declare it refurbished. So I steered clear of Seagate for years and spent time checking reviews.

Note that over 90% of the time the problem is usually a bad/leaky capacitor.

But it's been a long time and at this price I'm willing to take a chance and buy a Seagate HD at this price.

IMHO, manufacture refurbished, yes. Reseller refurbished, no. Reseller refurbished just means they reformatted the drives and ran a long SMART text and reported no bad selectors. I don't trust the reseller will be able to replace or repair the drive in three years. Will the reseller even be in business?

I see it's 88.99 now. Was on the fence to get this, but hesitant due to refurb. But I'm currently looking for a USB external drive. I'd need an enclosure too. Think it's worth the hassle, I don't see any decent external drives at a decent price these days

Any data that you care about should be backed up regardless of what brand or age it is. These comments are so dumb, sorry.

They've been selling on ebay since 2005 and have a 99.9% favorable feedback rating with 461,000+ items sold. Which retailer are you going to with a better service history? No manufacturers have that kind of satisfaction rate.
