If I have just a few stock sales, can I still use just the deluxe version? Or do I need to upgrade to premium?

You do not need premium. Take it from me. I know what I'm talking about. I use Deluxe every year. You do not need premium.

You can basically do it all with deluxe, it just won't hand hold you the same as premier. If you've done taxes with stocks before theres no real reason you should need to upgrade.

Although if you go the online route your are infact limited by pay walls, where you can proceed until you purchase the upgrade. I have seen it says "pay at the end, when you file" but I'm not entirely sure if it lets you proceed and shows you your tax amount and forces you to pay... Or just delays the payment...

Didn't they get in trouble with the Feds for that upselling?

What's the difference between this and filling on their site,? Typically, we use the premium bundle online as we own a small business. How does this compare to the Home+Business software?
The desktop version is more powerful (deluxe does everything, no need for premiere), you get 5 federal e-files and unlimited printed returns, your data stays local and out of the cloud. The state download includes the forms for one state, but there is an added fee for state e-file.

Online advantages are the ability to work from any device, including mobile, and the fact that they save a copy of your return to use for next year.

They got in trouble for advertising it was "free…free, free, free…free." Now they have to say it's "free*" with a disclaimer that it's "1040 and limited credits only." They still upsell like crazy in the software.

I think the "added guidance" in premiere is garbage. I haven't seen any evidence of exactly what that is or anyone claim it was actually useful.

Wrong. Most states do not let you file for free online. There are only a few states that allow you a free online filing of your taxes.
Here is a blog post with a list of states with direct free e-file (and links to get started): https://thefinancebuff.com/free-e...irect.html
My quick count shows 26 states that support this and of course there are several with no state income tax at all.
