Almost all top reviews give one star since it didn't work out of the box or broke almost immediately, 122 of 300 reviews give it 1 star. i'd rather pay $20 for one that works and is accurate.

Well some pictures look like they didn't open the probe, you need to open the probe for it to work. I purchased two and the first one works well out of the box.
I guess I'm lucky 😀

Purchased one and it didn't work! Yes I opened it first even tried a new battery.

If someone is looking for alternatives, I got a similar one from Amazon's Govee shop for $10 when it was on clearance. That device is much better with Bluetooth alerts and great battery life. A newer model is listed now for $25 which is a bit much. Maybe wait for a sale, I'm sure these will go on sale during spring/summer.
