When these showed up a couple of weeks back sold through Amazon I purchased 4. These drives are Enterprise monsters and are very well built but also quite old. A different subvariant of the same model (also about 5 years old) shows up on the latest Backblaze data with a 5% annual failure rate. Probably no good for mission-critical applications but a reasonable option for backups. I tested all 4 with a full surface scan using HGST DFT. All 4 passed but one of the 4 immediately started showing "click of death" symptoms. The seller, goHardDrive replaced the misbehaving drive with no fuss.

For those that don't want to go through Newegg, the same drive under goHardDrive's MDD brand is available on Amazon for the same price.

Always have backups of your backups. Have a drive you keep unplugged and update it every so often.

I grabbed one from the sellers bay store for the same price. Shipped quick, got here fired up and was presented with about 3 times the amount of noise my WD6tb red drive does when it PLW's (that every 5 seconds sweep). This drive is much lower pitched than the red nas drive so it is more of a thunk than the red. I've got it in a Qnap in the closet in my mostly silent house. Even with the closet door closed I hear 'thunk, thunk thunk'. Not sure this'll last as at least with caching enabled the 6tb was mostly silent. I keep throwing around the idea of getting the 550 in a 14tb as noise wise that's fairly on par with the red nas drive.

That said this drive when accessed for random files sounds like a rock tumbler.

I purchased 2 drives from goHardDrive a couple months ago and they were both DOA and would not be recognized at all in multiple systems.

I emailed them asking if they knew of a problem with this batch of drives or had reports of any issues and received a canned response of a troubleshooting step that was of course AFTER getting the system to recognize the drive exists.

The RMA process was painless though.

This deal has a 5 year warranty thou.

Question! If lets say the HD fails and you got 4 years of personal storage...what's next? I got alot of pics that i would hate to lose.

Another question one might ask (in addition to "what's next?") might be, "What's before?" i.e. How might I avoid losing my important data in the event of the failure of a single device?

If it's important, it might be worth backing up, possibly more than once, possibly even in a different location, maybe even on different types of media and testing the backups periodically.

Newegg says 90 days. No way these old drives have 5 year warranty. If they say HGST on them and not WD SKU these are quite old so YMMV. You may get a few years out of them.

In another thread someone posted that they confirmed with the vendor that it does have a 5 year warranty. 90 days is for returns to Newegg. HGST was purchased by WD in 2012. Not sure what your point is about it being a WD SKU...

if you have proof of what you are posting great, but my research says otherwise.

5 year warranty is through the seller, not the manufacturer. Seller goes out of business and your warranty goes out the window. A lot can happen in 5 years.

Seagate listing has 3 year warranty if that matters. This specific deal says 90 days so YMMV -- not sure where one thinks its 5 years for this price or age. On gHD similar drive w/ 5 year is $160.

I have purchased many drives from gHD they are a good seller, but just be aware when you go through newegg and ebay they may sell the second and third tier drives many times with reduced warranty. You will have to pay $$$ to get a drive w/ 5 years.

gHD also white labels drive called MDD and I like those because they do come w/ 5 year warranty although the firmware is out of spec (OOS) they work just fine for my duty cycle and I beat them up for a week before they enter service.

Then you're not buying used drives to begin with. Anyone buying from serverpartdeals or goharddrive is looking to buy at a discount from a vendor that's been in the game for a while and has good feedback, which both already do. If that's not you....move along and spend more on a retail drive or whatever.
