When these showed up a couple of weeks back sold through Amazon I purchased 4. These drives are Enterprise monsters and are very well built but also quite old. A different subvariant of the same model (also about 5 years old) shows up on the latest Backblaze data with a 5% annual failure rate. Probably no good for mission-critical applications but a reasonable option for backups. I tested all 4 with a full surface scan using HGST DFT. All 4 passed but one of the 4 immediately started showing "click of death" symptoms. The seller, goHardDrive replaced the misbehaving drive with no fuss.

Well prove its 5 years. It doesn't say that so I am open to be corrected it says 90 days. It doesnt make common sense to provide a 5 year warranty to a drive is at least 4 years old. NOBODY is going to cover a spinning drive for 9 years for $90. If you believe they will go right ahead. Give me a call in 5 years.

WD moved over to WD SKU around 4 years ago so if it is a native HGST drive (by its description) this means that is at least 4 years old, probably older.

If GoHardDrive is reputable, great. I've never heard of them, but I do buy from ServerPartsDeals on occasion.

I was just clarifying in case people didn't realize the warranty was from the seller.

You're not very aware of the market for used drives if you know serverpartsdeals, but not goharddrive. They are the two major players, both have been around for a long time and are reputable.

Correct assumption. ServerPartsDeals sells more than drives though. I don't typically buy used drives. I'm not arguing they aren't a reliable company, I've just never heard of them.

Yes, these warrantees are from the seller. That's almost always how it is with these "refurb"/server pull enterprise drives. You'll never get a refurbished drive with a full manufacturer warrantee for anything even close to these prices.

They've been around for quite a few years, with dozens of different deals posted here all through that time. Pretty much everyone here has said that they honor their warrantees. That sounds kind of like the definition of "reputable".

That said, you should ALWAYS back up your data on ANY hard drive, but especially older ones, like these. A warrantee can't make up for terabytes of lost data, pictures, game saves, etc.

All of that said, these drives have been this price on Amazon (also from GoHardDrive) many times over the past several months. It may be a Slick Deal, but it's a common and frequent Slick Deal.

The 'refurbing' of an Enterprise drive is literally, zero out the sectors and pop it in a box. Mechanical issues arn't going to be refub'd by goharddrive, they'll just flip you another drive that passed SMART.
SED (self encrypting drives) can be 'wiped' in a second. It tosses the onboard encryption key and makes a new one. Poof, data is scrambled. Run a SMART check and pop it in a box.
I'm debating trying the x18 EXOS in 16gb because back ups of back up back ups.

Those who think it only comes with a 90 day warranty/returns and not the 5 year warranty, I got verification from goHardDrive just in case and they confirmed it does indeed have a 5 year warranty through them.
