you are partially correct. It depends on whether or not you need VPN and the login protocol of the cruise line internet. The one I posted works with all protocols including EAP. Even the more expensive ones sometimes dont have EAP. I had the slate model but upgraded first to the Beryl AX model, since on paper that seemed better. But actually using it tells you what the issues were. The Beryl AX didnt have EAP, only worked with an older version of software (with bugs) and it ran hot. Had issues connecting to my VPN and couldnt get VPN to work reliably. So even though it was newer and more expensive and better on paper, it had fewer capabilities, I finally ended up with hte version I posted, had EAP, ran on a more updated firmware, was power efficient and never got hot and was fast enough. It paid for itself many times over on the cruise. (Saved me 2 people x $15/day x 16 days) = $480.) It was worth it spending $90 for certainty vs $20 uncertainty prior to the trip. Yes it was 4x the cost of the $20 model, but if it didnt work, it would have cost me a lot more than the additional money

BTW, I see posts all the time of people that claim model X is better based on specs, but actually never tried it. Wish they would put disclaimers and not be so certain of their claims. (Not talking about your post). Most important for a travel router to me is useability.

These are older obsolete versions. For me, they arent worth the bother despite the low cost. IF you want a travel router, I highly recommend this one:
https://www.amazon.com/GL-iNet-GL...R2PX&psc=1

I used it on a recent cruise with it plugged into an Anker phone battery and it worked as a hotspot all over the ship for my family. Worked perfectly. Also used it in VPN mode to connect back to my home network and while slow, worked OK. (It was slow because the ship internet speed was slow. )

One thing I learned from this post is that there are a lot of slickdealsers that go on cruises.

Got the MT1300 back in Prime Day in 2022 for $60.72 . Crazy it was only $20. It's been on 24/7 for the last 2 years with no issues. I connect when I want to visit more... how should we put it... sites of a more scandalous nature that I don't want my ISP to know I've visited.

Why did you return it?
IIRC, it can only work over 2.4ghz and does not have a 5ghz antenna. OR perhaps I can't use both 2.4 and 5ghz at the same time. It was something along those lines.

Use my Beryl on flights, everyone I'm travelling with connects to it and watches a different movie of their choice.
So you connect your phone hard wired to this device and then the device broadcast SSID for others to connect? The hardwiring with phone pulls native data and not hotspot data?

Thanks for replying.

Do you have to go in and change the beryl MAC address to match your phone to get the internet working on the router?

Why is that needed if cell phone can already share its connected wifi or cell data?
Some providers limit the number of devices you can tether. e.g. Visible limits to just 1.

Thought it's a phone limitation and most are 6-8

I think you were trying to say "MT3000" than "MT1300".
MT1300 did not sell that high price

I have Slate and it worked well, I manually compiled my own flavor of OpenWRT and it has ever since been working reliably. The only issue is it can be underpowered a bit by modern standard, the VPN performance of Wireguard is more or less OK, OpenVPN is not so great.
There are other options you may explore of course but if you have 5~10 devices then it probably would be enough.

No you have to do tether otherwise your phone won't share the network via the cable.

Your hotspot data is limited. Using one of these with Easytether makes it unlimited, it registers as on-device data. You can pull terabytes on hotspot if you want.

Why? Wifi sharing feature of hotspot shares the wifi that the cell phone connects with. That's pretty much "unlimited" as well...

I know Pixel has it, Oneplus, Samsung, even TCL has that.

You don't understand how hotspot data is different than on-device data. On-device is usually unlimited. Hotspot is limited. But using these with Easytether you're unlimited using your phone data, your provider counts it as unlimited on-device data rather than limited hotspot data.

Got it, that's to use mobile data with no cap, unless you get throttled. How does this travel router come in play?

Many US providers usually have a separate limit for hotspot data. For example, Verizon Unlimited Plus gives you unlimited 5G UW but only 30GB high speed data is available for hotspot.

I've noticed that if I USB tether the portable router to my phone, VZ considers that as on-device data instead of hotspot data.
