Those days are over. Almost all promotions require redemption via the app and the most recent "free Big Mac" promotions required a $3 minimum purchase. Still a deal obviously but hardly the free and $1 Big Macs of yesteryear.
In SoCal, McD's coupons have gotten pretty tight. Even the perpetual $6 Big Mac Value Meal deal changed to a Double Cheeseburger recently. If you don't use the app, they'll throw you a bone -- sometimes even a 50% discount off your entire purchase -- but that's about it.

McDonald's likely gets stuff way cheaper than a typical restaurant, due to the volume they move and having contacts in place.
That's like thinking Amazon pays as much to ship an item, as consumer pricing.
Late pandemic response, or cashing in already least expensive item to try to get increased profit margin?
