Happy meals are a scam, I've eaten dozens and I'm still not happy.

If you're ever in Chicago and are a McDonald's fan, be sure to check out the company's headquarters in the West Loop. There, you can try hamburgers offered in other countries, a unique experience you won't find anywhere else in the States.

I've been getting 1 dollar Big Macs and other "premium" sandwiches regularly with the app for years. I'd imagine I've single handedly cost McDonald's thousands of dollars. I never buy it unless it's significantly discounted.

Count me in on the Big Mac and happy meal day

Why was this "personalized" for me? I live on the other side of the country from California...

Explain how they make money selling me a large drink and a Big Mac for 1 dollar. There is no possible way to make a profit on that. I've ran a restaurant, the drink alone is like 70-80 ¢ per serving. In California, it's at least $1.20 due to increased labor costs and generally things being more expensive.
They don't. But they will make that up by selling the next customer more stuff with a higher margin. You walked into the restaurant is the whole purpose of this promotion. They need foot traffic to be a certain amount to be profitable. If you buy something, that's even better. Because the product you bought, no matter how little you pay, will have negative value to them if they have to throw it away after closing.

It's the same as Costcos rotisserie chicken and cheap hot dogs. Advertisment stunts

It's more of a PR stunt than making money. After the backlash, the company needs damage control. This promo, despite the loss, is miniscule and insignificance to their annual global sales.
What backlash? What happened?

The lowest it's gotten here was $2. Lately it's been $3. Granted I live in CA

I'm sorry, but people shouldn't be eating that. Not a biggies when it's once in a while, but this is straight up garbage food. I don't deny that it can taste well, but I don't get that obsession with fast food, especially McDonald's, because the very basic ratio of price-deliciousness-health isn't there. Back in the days it was affordable to eat in McDonalds, but not today. So you're left with garbage food that is expensive and is very bad for you. America, wake tf up and eat healthy.

Thank you, went to McDonald's last week, got a egg mcmuffin breakfast meal with 1 hashbrown and a small orange juice, meal came out $14, outrageous.
The place is a straight ripoff and that needs to be constantly repeated so people will stop patronizing their restaurants. Junk food shouldn't be that expensive. Emphasis on junk.

The same deal has been available for me but not my roommate. Maybe some kind of A-B testing.

Little bit of a misleading title.

I fully expected to read that McDonald's was literally giving away free food in California - no strings attached.

They run these kinds of deals everywhere - ymmv. Essentially, you buy something and get something for free. I can regularly get a McDouble, 6-piece chicken nuggets, and large fries for $3.99. Meanwhile a McDouble alone costs $3.69.
