"Unacceptable— Background is cropped out using a photo retouching tool, altering the outline of the head, face, and neck
Photo tip: Take your photo in front of a white or off-white background instead of cropping out the background."
"Unacceptable— Glasses not allowed
Photo tip: Even when glasses are worn every day, you must remove your glasses for a photo."
There are plenty of travel horror stories posted on the internet from people taking their own photo.
Thankfully the state department's systems when they scan and store your photo will catch things.
If you make passport appointment at USPS, it only costs you $15 for passport photo. Or even cheaper at Walmart Supercenter or Rite Aid where they charge you only $7.
Basically you have to wait till 2/29 only to save $7? Damn, my lunch meal is more than that.
Screw Staples for charging almost 400%.
Also if you take your own, make sure you light yourself up bright in the photo. Any shadowing will cause your passport to get rejected. Body slightly turned? Rejected. Background is not 1 solid color? Yep.

Paying more than a buck for a PP pic in this day and age is a ripoff
