Apple continues to artificially limit non-pro cpus to force an upgrade to pro if you want multiple external displays. I really like my apple products but the fact that non-pro laptops can't support multiple monitors out of the box like a $300 Windows laptop is asinine.
It's shameful that anyone is selling a laptop with only 8GB of non-upgradable RAM these days. Memory requirements only go up over time, life expectancy for most laptops is at least 3-4 years, and 8GB is already too little. Ina couple years anyone who bought only 8GB (especially on a "Pro" device) is going to be hating life.
Hard to justify when the 8GB, 256GB model is on sale for $1000. At this level we aren't doing the super high end stuff so I'd rather pay a bit more for high end or pay a bunch less $1000 for a laptop that is still very awesome

Good price. Announcement on the M3 spec bump just a few weeks away so retailers now clearing out old stock. Still, very hard to get a 16/1tb config in any new mac at this price unless going the refurb route.

How are these prices a "deal" when you can elsewhere get a Zen 4 w/ 32GB RAM, 2TB storage & 120+Hz OLED screen. Apple tax, LOL.
It gets 15 (apple says 18?) hours of battery life with no effort. I'd expect a zen 4 laptop to get 8-10? Which is still pretty good.

It's really hard to argue in favor of the macbook air tbh. I bought one because I wanted one. I don't want a gaming laptop because I have a desktop that offers a far, far better gaming experience anyway.

I wouldn't recommend the 8gb ram macbook airs for one's only computer. As a second like mine? Sure!

16GB is always the standard for me

Entry level is only 8gb ram -- you'll regret it. It won't matter if M3 is slightly faster, it will be hobbled by swap. The form factor of the MBP chassis is better, but the 15" screen is more useful.

Depends- do you really need the extra processing power and multi-monitors? Doing 3D, 4K editing with multi tracks & special effects?
If not I would go with the this air, the 16GB and 1TB storage will serve you better. The air is still plenty fast and can still handle a lot just fine- photoshop, regular editing, etc.

If you really need more power I would keep an eye out for a Pro deal that has 16GB vs a base M3 with only 8, like this recent post:
https://slickdeals.net/f/17297068-ymmv-costco-in-store-only-new-macbook-pro-m2-pro-14-2-16gb-ram-512gb-ssd-10cpu-16gpu-cores-space-gray-1199-97?src=SiteSearch
Or keep an eye out for M3 Pro 18GB deals, though lowest price I've seen is $1799 so far.

I'd say it comes down to use cases for people too. Some creative industries prefer Mac for their use cases.

A 15" Air gives people access to a larger screen without having to pay for a 16" MBP.

The Zenbook 4 would be much better off for general and enterprise use, such as financial modeling in Excel.

Apple tax to upgrade storage and RAM comes at a significant premium, but it's deals like these that help reduce some of that premium on a purchase directly from Apple.

I have the Zenbook 14X OLED from a $700 tax free Best Buy deal last year with a 13th gen i7, 16/512, 120Hz OLED. Works well, but battery life is like 6-8 hrs.

I use Mac for video editing and Windows for data visualization.

Good point if you're talking about performance. However I believe people forget the original purpose of the MacBook Air was to be as thin and light as possible. If you're looking for form factor over specs, but still want to beef up the performance as much as possible, this is a decent deal. Sure you can pay a bit more for MBP but you're getting a smaller screen on a thicker and heavier machine.

Either way I'd be tempted to wait for the M3 version unless the need is urgent. The base M3 is quite a healthy upgrade over the M2.
