Apple continues to artificially limit non-pro cpus to force an upgrade to pro if you want multiple external displays. I really like my apple products but the fact that non-pro laptops can't support multiple monitors out of the box like a $300 Windows laptop is asinine.

It's shameful that anyone is selling a laptop with only 8GB of non-upgradable RAM these days. Memory requirements only go up over time, life expectancy for most laptops is at least 3-4 years, and 8GB is already too little. Ina couple years anyone who bought only 8GB (especially on a "Pro" device) is going to be hating life.

Hard to justify when the 8GB, 256GB model is on sale for $1000. At this level we aren't doing the super high end stuff so I'd rather pay a bit more for high end or pay a bunch less $1000 for a laptop that is still very awesome

How much ram does macOS utilize idling? I feel 8gb is very low in general unless you are running Linux

For those looking to extend m1, m2, and m3 Macs to multi-monitor you can use DisplayLink certified adapters as they act as external video cards. I use this one on my M1 Mac Mini:

Some docks are DisplayLink certified as well. You need to install a driver but other than that it's pretty much plug and play.

Just FYI that this is an option. Adapters can be found for under $100 so YMMV on price vs higher end processors and will depend on your graphics needs.

The only thing that will make Apple change is people stop buying those laptops.

Which might be happening -- even a year ago I could see a lot of people here shilling for Apple saying "8GB is good enough and better than your Windows laptop" blah blah. These days the wind has changed and the consensus is that 8GB/256GB is bad (unless the laptop is heavily discounted).

Lots of problems with going DisplayLink -- reports of freezing, heat and issues viewing DRM content. I can't stand paying extra money to get a subpar experience instead of just getting native support from the machine, as in Macbook Pro or most Windows laptops out there

Definitely see some performance issues even on my MacBook Pro 14 M1 Pro for work. Also, the color temperature it outputs is totally different/more blue than what is output from native display out. Still, for my use case at least (lots of browser windows, Slack, etc.) the pros outweigh the cons for productivity. I'm sure it's the same for others, surely not for all though.

This appeals to me because after my M1 MBA, I don't ever want to own a laptop with a fan again. My needs aren't very demanding but this might be more future-proof than the base 8/256 model. I am curious to see the M3 MBAs next month though.
