Apple continues to artificially limit non-pro cpus to force an upgrade to pro if you want multiple external displays. I really like my apple products but the fact that non-pro laptops can't support multiple monitors out of the box like a $300 Windows laptop is asinine.
It's shameful that anyone is selling a laptop with only 8GB of non-upgradable RAM these days. Memory requirements only go up over time, life expectancy for most laptops is at least 3-4 years, and 8GB is already too little. Ina couple years anyone who bought only 8GB (especially on a "Pro" device) is going to be hating life.
Hard to justify when the 8GB, 256GB model is on sale for $1000. At this level we aren't doing the super high end stuff so I'd rather pay a bit more for high end or pay a bunch less $1000 for a laptop that is still very awesome

Space Gray and MIdnmight seem to be sold out for shipping. Maybe local store pickup?
They will come in and out of stock on the site. I just purchased a midnight one a few minutes ago. I used the Distilled Web Monitor extension in Firefox (may be available in Chrome), you can use it to monitor a item on the page. In this case, I used it to monitor the word "Sold Out". Then you can setup how often it checks (every 30 seconds) and notifications where it can play a sound and open the page in a new tab. Then move quickly through check out to purchase and make sure your have your CC info saved as you will need to be fast! It took me three different times before my purchase made it through.

Windows supports 32bit and 64bit still, and HW from 20 years back. Adds bloat. Various background crapware is included on most laptops, clean install of Windows is task for user

That logic only works for the Air 13. The Air 15 is only .1 lb lighter than the Pro 14. It isn't a light machine at all. Thin? Sure, but I've never understood the people who like "some heft" to their electronics. If I'm buying a portable device I want as little weight on my shoulders or in my pocket as possible.
I get your point, but the 15" is closer in screen size to the 16" MBP than the 14". So, it's a slightly lighter machine with a significantly larger screen, all at a lower price. The logic still works.

This or the 8gb version for $999? I currently have an 13.3" air m1 8g 256gb and it has served me well but could use the extra screen space. BB offered me $575 for trade in. I can get an open box 8gb for $920.

Not magically. Apple built their hardware and their OS. They dictate the rules to be followed such as memory allocations and clean-ups. Windows does not have much control over hardware and applications. Most Windows laptops come with bloatware while Macbook comes completely clean. You buy the laptop, not the adware or bloatware, and the performance stays consistent until the end of its life. I am still using my Macbook Pro from 2014. Another very simple example, Windows major patches have a tendency to remove AMD Catalyst software and replace the driver with Window's. It has been going on for a long while and still happening. (PA-300 error). I had to disable Windows from doing it from the registry and it still does it occasionally. As you can see, Windows unable to sort out simple issue like this. Why in the world Windows go in and replace AMD drivers on its own?? Anyway, the screen will go blackout or blinking. So, reinstalling AMD software will fix it. This will NEVER happened in Mac because they are Apple own the hardware, OS and tested their own QA in their own confined environment where everyone else is using on the same setup. How does it goes wrong when people using the same exact setup tested in the exact same environment ? So, it is not magically, it common sense really ...

What? It's not closer. They're both a 1 inch difference. 1 inch is insignificant.

Yes, it actually is closer. It's 15.3", so 0.9" from the 16.2" and 1.1" from the 14.2". I have used all three sizes and very much disagree that 1 inch is insignificant. If you want a big screen with the least amount of heft, the MBA is fantastic (and basically every reviewer has said the same thing, so I know I'm not the only one who thinks this).

I've used MBA 15 and MBP 14, and the refresh rate and the miniLED made ten times more difference than the extra 1" (okay, 1.1"). Reviewers' opinions are useless.
