I have a iPad Pro 10.5 but it's a lightning port so would this require an adapter? Is there an advantage compared to Pencil 1?

This should work fine as it has the Lightning output. The included adapter just lets you charge it with a USB-C cable, which is better than just having it stick out of the bottom of your iPad.
