You mind sharing a couple areas where filing separately made sense? Which years? Maybe I'll file amended return(s).
It's rare— usually where one spouse qualifies for a credit or benefit due to a low AGI but the couple is over the qualifying amount on a joint return. Even then you have to compare the value of the additional credit against the savings for the high earner because of the lower tax rate on the high earner's income obtained by filing jointly. You need to run the numbers. It might also occur if spouses work in different states with dramatically different state income taxes. But Covid rules were grossly unfair. For example the IRS was supposed to send every one stimulus checks and if you didn't qualify you were allowed to keep them anyway. But if IRS screwed up and didn't send you a check then you could only get an equivalent tax credit IF you did qualify. So when IRS sent checks to the spouse whose earnings didn't qualify but not to the spouse whose lower earnings did qualify — then if you filed jointly the spouse who did qualify would not receive the equivalent tax credit if the AGI on joint return was over the Covid limit.for joint returns to qualify. So the spouse who did qualify —but didn't receive a check— had to file separately to get the equivalent tax credit. Other Covid rules were similarly poorly designed so often one spouse could qualify for some credit or benefit but the other did not and when filing jointly they both didn't. So you had to file separately for the qualifying spouse to get the benefit

That would only apply if separate returns were done on the same computer, with the same software

Why would I do that since they would not be nearly as qualified as I am? I have a Masters of Law in Taxation from the most prestigious post-JD tax program in the country. But that does not mean I want to do all of the mathematical calculations and drafts needed to run all of the different (permitted ) scenarios to see which produces the best results (itemized deductions vs standard deduction or joint return vs two separate returns etc). During Covid it turned out I saved $11,000 by filing separate returns for the first time in 29 years due to all of the quirky one-time Covid relief measures. I don't do individual tax planning (except estate tax planning ) so why would I want to learn the details of all of these quirky Covid measures that expired the same year they were passed.
You all of people should know that a true tax professional (not the ones in Wal-Mart) can process everything you are wanting processed, along with the different scenarios, along with keeping up to date on current tax law, for a rather inexpensive fee. I don't care about how you do your taxes, but you shouldn't complain about a computer program's lack of features or accuracy when there are better options for people with unique situations.

That isn't the issue— someone said I should pay one of those people $250 — and my question was why would I do that when I am far more qualified.

With your qualifications, paying someone $100/hour when you are making more than that makes sense, doesn't it?

No because no one cares more about your return than you do.

I have a small request.
I typically buy one and share it with my brother. I was hoping to get it on the next deal but he needs it in a hurry as he will be travelling later.
Is there any chance, someone can just share the download/software so that he can start his return.
I dont need the keycode as I will be buying it shortly whenever the next deal around $20 shows up.

If you can share just the software, I will be very grateful

thanks
