Just received mine. Tested with chkdsk and passed /f /r /x.
Always test these before you deploy them on servers.

Yeah, you'll find how people who understand how to safely maintain data with backups are happy to ride out the (generally long) life left on these used enterprise drives for the significant discount.

Then you'll also find the people who have no understanding of how to protect data, or the bathtub curve of failure, getting thumbs down for their "warnings"

Let the "Seagate Sucks vs Western Digital Sucks" wars begin. I've been using several of these recertified data center drives from both manufacturers for years without any problems whatsoever but remember on a long enough timeline every drive will eventually fail. Just remember if you're storing critical data on any drive it would behoove you to practice redundancy and back it up elsewhere as well.

I wouldn't say "slinging around", but even so, they're still rated for more mechanical runtime than your average
consumer drive. Besides, mechanical failure in general is in some ways more common and at a higher pain point on consumer hardware than at enterprise scale, simply because of the difference in volume. You might see one bum drive in the time it takes enterprise servers to find dozens, but it might also take you much longer to reach that conclusion (see Seagate Barracudas mfg in the early 2010s).

These were probably used in a RAID for some database, where the files are mostly contiguous and cached.

Feel how you will, but I would definitely trust these far more coming out of a server than some home NAS or gaming PC.
Backblaze did an analysis of enterprise drives vs consumer drives and found no difference. That has nothing to do with my "feelings."

Also enterprise operations buy hardware to use it. My NAS most of the time is going to have a tiny fraction of the activity an enterprise server will have. Even if they are both up 24-7 the actuator in my drives is going to sling around a lot less.

Consumers are using SSDs for small random writes. These HDD are mostly for large contiguous video files with a smaller amount of space for picture files.

Yes, but you need to buy an enclosure or adapter that does SATA to USB. Also, be sure to get one with additional wall outlet power as USB power alone isn't enough to power a 3.5" HDD.

That said, you might be better served (and possibly cheaper) just buying an already to go external HDD.

I just received two of these drives today and I have been impressed so far. They look pristine, and they were very well shipped in sealed static bags wrapped in bubble wrapped and packed tightly in the Box. Both drives past my initial "normal" 30 minute test in hard drive Sentinel Pro. Of course the big question is how long they will last and none of this proves anything, but it's a promising start.

I purchased two of these and just got them in the mail today. CrystalDiskInfo shows zero power on hours so i'm guessing the controllers are brand new.

They're unlikely to be new. SMART data gets wiped as part of the refurbishing process.

It probably would, depending on your use case and where you plan on installing it (these don't do well shoved in single drive enclosures).

But when you say backup, you aren't referring to just the 10TB, right?

A single backup drive is not enough to be considered a true backup.
No, I am not referring to just the 10TB. My main use is for photo storage and occasional viewing of the pictures.

Yeah, like I was saying, only having one drive where your data is stored isn't a reliable backup.

If you value the data on there, you need to have it in more than one location.

It goes beyond the reliability of the drive. What if your house floods or burns down?

Oh, good, I'll go tell all these data centers that they can save a fortune if they just buy a bunch of Barracudas or WD Blues.

I'm sure they'll go for that.

You literally just described Backblaze's business model. 🤣

I don't know about WD Blue HDD because their speed is lower than even my 8 year old WD Black consumer drives, but certainly reasonable consumer drives seem to work fine in the data center.

Got mine installed last week. This thing is like a brick, heavy and solid. Formatted no issues and sustained 200+ MB write speeds. SMART looks good and controllers report 0 hours.

Was SMART data intact or wiped? How many hours on them?
