Just received mine. Tested with chkdsk and passed /f /r /x.
Always test these before you deploy them on servers.

Yeah, you'll find how people who understand how to safely maintain data with backups are happy to ride out the (generally long) life left on these used enterprise drives for the significant discount.

Then you'll also find the people who have no understanding of how to protect data, or the bathtub curve of failure, getting thumbs down for their "warnings"

Let the "Seagate Sucks vs Western Digital Sucks" wars begin. I've been using several of these recertified data center drives from both manufacturers for years without any problems whatsoever but remember on a long enough timeline every drive will eventually fail. Just remember if you're storing critical data on any drive it would behoove you to practice redundancy and back it up elsewhere as well.

Man I want to buy this so bad, but I have 5x 8TB (in raid 5) drives I would have to replace. I am struggling to justify that kind of spend when I am at 50% usage, and I have a old ass array of 6TB drives for a backup already.

For those discussing "used enterprise" drives, I've had years of experience with them. Of the dozens I've ran for years as second hand, I only ever had to replace one.

Of the customer-grade ones over the years, I've had several die.

Just my experience!
And I too do a lot of work in data centers. Enterprise class drives have a completely different lifestyle and life expectancy.

Also it looks like these are SED drives if anyone wants to rely on that type of encryption. I wouldn't bother and would use it as a normal drive.

I just received two of these drives today and I have been impressed so far. They look pristine, and they were very well shipped in sealed static bags wrapped in bubble wrapped and packed tightly in the Box. Both drives past my initial "normal" 30 minute test in hard drive Sentinel Pro. Of course the big question is how long they will last and none of this proves anything, but it's a promising start.
Are they noticeably louder?

I didn't find them to be that loud. I'm not sure what people's expectations are, but they didn't seem particularly loud to me. I'll have to go back and put one in again to see how many hours it has been in use. It did have the smart data and it wasn't wiped out

Was SMART data intact or wiped? How many hours on them?
Spoke too soon. Showing zero hours, so maybe it was wiped when they "refurbished" it.

I just received the 12TB HGST HDDs from Goharddrive from Newegg today. It was on the frontpage as well for $79 (correction $85)

1 of 2 is already DOA - if HDD is plugged in PC won't pass POST. I was able to after 2-3 tries and Crystalinfo says CAUTION and there are Smart errors found already .. so that is goind back.

The 2nd disk is "GOOD" in Crystaldiskinfo but DAMN IT .. I think it is also broken as it sounds like a grinding machine.

I'm about to run badblocks to see how it goes but ...

Anyone wonder if this is better deal than these HGST? I bought a 14TB Exos from serverpartdeals drive and it doesn't make this awful sound.

Thoughts?

Exos drives are superior in quality compared to these but will definitely be better than HGST drives in my opinion.

Without knowing which EXACT drives you are talking about your post is meaningless. I've had consumer drives that were complete garbage and other consumer drives from the same manufacturer I would put up against any enterprise drive. Really depends on the year and model.

It is routine for these "refurbished" drives to have clean SMART stats... then they fail initial stress tests. 🤣

They are definitely wiped.

i got this exact refurb a couple of weeks ago, SMART is wiped showing 0 hours and SED is unlocked. seems fine in quick tests, didn't seem THAT loud compared to my EXOs. i ended up not adding it to my NAS but I have it as a backup in case one of my drives starts to fail.

Love the thumb down on this post lol

People keep saying "bathtub" curve implying majority of the failure is on new drives, which isn't even true for newer drives. The thing is, drive failure increases significantly after 5 years (hence the bathtub). These drives are older than 5 years and out of warranty -- that's why the data centers are dumping them. https://www.backblaze.com/blog/dr...s-leaking/

You're right.
Seagate constellation and Seagate ironwolf.

I didn't buy as refurb but just second hand via eBay or forums.

Also running data centers I see the stats in drives that are pulled after 5-7 years and they often still look good.

The consumer drives I've had issues with were older WD or Seagate from experience, but I haven't used spinning consumer grade drives in 10+ years now for my NAS/SAN (using ZFS actually).
