Yeah, you'll find how people who understand how to safely maintain data with backups are happy to ride out the (generally long) life left on these used enterprise drives for the significant discount.

Then you'll also find the people who have no understanding of how to protect data, or the bathtub curve of failure, getting thumbs down for their "warnings"

Let the "Seagate Sucks vs Western Digital Sucks" wars begin. I've been using several of these recertified data center drives from both manufacturers for years without any problems whatsoever but remember on a long enough timeline every drive will eventually fail. Just remember if you're storing critical data on any drive it would behoove you to practice redundancy and back it up elsewhere as well.

I agree with the SMART info wiping part, but the age of the drive is pretty much reflected by the manufacturing date. One can make the worst case from that to evaluate the condition of the drive. A 5 year car can have a wide range of mileage on it, but a 5 year drive would not be run for more than 5 years (43,830 hours vs 2,500,000 hours in MTBF).

Mine was manufactured in April 2019. So a Rev.C of v7 Enterprise drive. I think Exos started from Enterprise v9.

So i've tried these drives (i bought two) on debian, mac and unraid and the drives just beep. They dont spin up. They dont do anything. I read something about needing more power and thats what the beep is, but im not sure. I reached out to the seller to see if they have any ideas. Otherwise i am gonna return these. Anyone have any helpful hints or ran into these drives beeping?

If it's an Enterprise level drive it may require pin taping. Do a little research and see if you need to tape pin 3. I can't say for this exact drive, but it's definitely a common issue on WD Enterprise drives.

Yes, I have a few refurbished Exos X26z. Which are SMR. And they are fine for archive. And they are 25tb a piece. You cant get that with CMR. I believe there are newer 28tb and 29tb models coming out too. So SMR still has a place.

Thanks for the reply. Ive had to do that in the past, but it seems like many people have been able to get these to be recognized immediately on normal hardware. I plopped it into my QNAP (which is running unraid) and it just beeped as well. Super weird.

My drives are making grinding noises like crazy. Definitely not a normal sound. Sadly, my only choice is to return them, and then buy something new.

For the overwhelming majority of people, the answer is Synology. Synology is the easiest to set up and maintain, with wide support and robust packages. The only time I would suggest someone look at another brand is if they are linux experts and can do a lot of complex installations themselves, in which case QNAP often has a little better hardware for the same price. But remember, these aren't built to be desktop computers, and to be an outstanding NAS you don't need beefy processors and tons of memory.
The other reason Synology leads the pack is SHR - Synology Hybrid Raid. If you have several drives, SHR gives you flexibility on getting the most usable storage space while maintaining redundancy. This is a big deal if you have multiple drives of different sizes you want to use, and gives you more flexibility for the future. But this isn't as big a deal in a 2 bay NAS, because your only options in any 2 bay NAS are raid 0 (striping), raid 1 (mirroring), or JBOD.
If you are trying to get a good NAS as cheaply as possible, look for a Synology 2 bay. But I personally would rather have a used 4 bay from a previous generation than a brand new Synology 224+. Two drive bays really limit your options.
