A used latitude in good shape will likely outlast a new Inspiron, and $399 is more than double the price of this deal.
You can return these on Dell Refurbished's dime if there is anything wrong (such as loose hinges).
I bought one of these in Sept 2023; at this price I enjoy replacing them every 2-3 years. I think this is my third or fourth used Latitude laptop. They're still useful to those I give them away to.

It's on my desk now, driving two 32" 4K monitors from the HDMI sand USB-C ports, plus the 14" screen, running 50 edge tabs, notes, outlook, chrome, and teams. I'm managing Azure & M365 resources, coding in PS via the portal. it's durable, well-supported, easy to buy parts for (I put in a 2TB drive for my photography, for which I run PS and LR Classic).

In short, a perfectly fine laptop for those who don't game.
These are great for some special use cases where you wouldn't want to spend big $$ on new hardware with the latest and most powerful processors. Case in point - I bought one of the 7400s a few weeks ago for $190 during their last sale. I got it specifically to use with the Forscan ODB II software for reading codes and tweaking options on my Ford truck. Add a $40 ODB II USB interface and I have a great fully-functional bi-directional scan tool for use with my vehicles for under $250.

A semi-pro purpose-built scan tool with same same capabilities would have run me at least $500 or more (and they typically are custom android tablets). As a bonus, this is a Windows 11 laptop that can serve other purposes.

Intel 8th generation processors came out 8 years ago (2017).
We're now at the 14th generation of Intel processors.

These heavily used, but cleaned, scratched, battery-worn, old laptops have been used within a company (or two) by multiple people for the past 5-7 years?
Perhaps after three years when they were completely written off for tax purposes they were repurchased in bulk by another company for pennies on the dollar. Now they're being cleaned and re-sold yet again.

Several recent $399 Dell laptop deals for new, and latest gen, processors have been posted in SD recently. You're guaranteed a lengthy product life with the latest tech including modern security features.

How is it that FedEx Recycling continues to have 6th, 7th and 8th generation Intel-based products still in inventory being resold?
I'll guess that they have a warehouse containing several thousand older computer units but they're only able to clean and test 50-100 units each week. Therefore, these units may have been stored for 1-3 years and not used daily for the past 5-8 years.

Intel 8th gen ages well, not much of difference from 11th Gen. Beside iGPU

These on average have 350 day clocked on ssd, 75-95% battery health.

They make great laptop spare. Nothing comes close $160 with 16/512. Even 8/256 is usuable

I bought one from dell refurbished almost two years ago Dell latitude 5491 i5-8400h, with 8 gb ram and I added another 8 gb ram. It looked like it was new and has worked well.

Agree. I got a Latitude 7390 two years back under a similar deal with an even older i7-8th gen chipset and it is decidedly faster than the XPS 9305 that I got new around the same time (XPS runs i7-11th gen and does not even haveb Windows Hellp facial recognition - does have fingerprint cum power button though). These latitudes are powerhorses.

I'm looking for a lighter weight laptop. Would any of these fit the bill?

Yep. The guy posting isn't aware of what good value is.

The 7400s are a very good line. 8th Gen is a very good CPU and easily competitive today unless you have high compute workloads in which case you probably don't need to be buying bargain enterprise laptops.

There is no vulnerability or handicap to 8th Gen - with one exception. Windows 11 is not officially supported and Windows 10 is on the way out. I don't see this as a problem at all, but some may.

8th Gen is officially supported on Windows 11. At the very least, the i5-8365U and i7-8665U that can be found in these dell refurbs are.
