These things aren't terrible if you re only doing a door or two but if you're doing more than that I'd get something a lot more solid. Its easy to damage this or not have it fully aligned properly if you're trying to move fast. Wouldn't use plastic like this to drill into something very tough like metal.

These things aren't terrible if you re only doing a door or two but if you're doing more than that I'd get something a lot more solid. Its easy to damage this or not have it fully aligned properly if you're trying to move fast. Wouldn't use plastic like this to drill into something very tough like metal.

Amen to that. For such a simple jig I don't understand why the better metal ones are hundreds of dollars. It's ridiculous

Yea the hole saw just cuts through the plastic guide. And the bit broke after using it for 2 doors.

Used this on 6 hardwood doors a few years ago. The best advice I could share is to take the doors down and do this on saw horses for the face sides. Then do the bolt side with them either stood up on the hinge side (hinge removed) or elevated to eye level. Take your time on the bolt side with the router work. I learned the hard way and had to fine tune the first door. Not to mention having to keeping the door in place when on hinges in a pain.

The plastic cuttout for the holes is ok. However, the router template need to be made of metal IMO. Again, taking the doors down allows better control of power tools and less risk of damaging the guide.

You can buy them pre "bored" it makes the slab $5 more at Home Depot. It's definitely worth the extra $5 if you can get away with using the existing strike plate on the door frame.

Not only is the hole for the door knob already cut, but the hole for the latch is also cut. Sometimes, they're not perfect, so I check before I get them to the jobsite.

No if buying just the slab/door so installer can be sure to align it properly. If buying with the jamb that's pre-hunged with hinges then it's comes pre-drilled.

I got another cheap one from Amazon to enlarge old doors hole so I can use modern lockset. Worked on one door but doesn't fit a thicker door. There's no where in the description saying what thickness door it works on.

The answer is yes and no.

There are doors without the hole. Then there are also doors that have a hole.

However, if you're replacing an existing door and the strike plate is already cut into the door jam, you better hope if you buy a pre-drilled door the hole is centered where the strike plate is.

Best bet is get a door without a hole, one of these guides, then use the hole saw on one side, drill about halfway through the door, then go on the opposite side and use the hole saw to drill through the remaining half.

Bunch of YouTube videos online showing what to do.

Will also need to use a router or chisel for the hinges.

It's a whole process.

Side note:

Generally the arbor costs at least $10 by itself.

Same for the each of the hole saws.

So of course you're going to get bottom of the barrel quality with a kit like this, when buying the arbor and the two hole saws would otherwise cost you $30+ by themselves if bought separately.

While we're on the topic of cheap tools for a couple of uses, how about this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product...U83S&psc=1 for $10 with a 5% coupon? This one is only for wooden doors. I only need to install a deadbolt on an existing door and handles and deadbolt on a new door.
