Framework is now selling "Factory Seconds" DIY laptops based on "B"-stock hardware—an Intel® Core™ i7-1165G7 build starts at $499. No RAM, HD, WiFi or OS included (bring your own or buy them separately). These builds still include a 1 year warranty and 30 day money-back guarantee.

From Framework:

Factory Seconds laptops are new systems that use excess parts. Rather than scrapping this material, we combine it with new parts, run it through our normal factory tests, and make the resulting laptops available at greatly reduced prices.

Each laptop is pre-packaged with a Framework screwdriver only. Memory, storage, WiFi, Power Adapter, Operating System, and Expansion Cards are not included. You can bring your own or pick them up in the Framework Marketplace.

A-stock units contain a matte display, while B-stock units contain an original display with slight cosmetic issues: fine lines on the surface that are noticeable from certain angle and/or backlight non-uniformity visible from an angle on a white screen (shown in the GIFs). Aside from the display, the A-stock and B-stock systems match the cosmetic specs we use for new laptops.

Available in the US, Canada, and Australia only. Ships within five business days.

Am I missing something? You can get a fully kitted out laptop with a i7-1165G7 for $350. I realize this is a blank slate otherwise but if you are going to dump $700-800 into the final product you can do much better than this ever could for the same or less money.

Neat concept but seems like it should be $200 max, especially with "B-stock hardware"

"We found that some of the excess displays have slight cosmetic issues. One issue is a wavy pattern on the surface that is noticeable from certain angles, and the other is a backlight non-uniformity visible from an angle on a white screen. We've categorized those as B-stock and further reduced pricing on them"

So shit screens and you have to dump a boatload of cash into building it out, and you're still in for $500 to start?

While I like the Framework concept, it doesn't make much financial sense at this point. Not to mention the fact that because of the modular design you give up words like sleek or non-bricklike.

I feel sorry for Framework. You'd think reading forums like Slickdeals, and seeing the constant: 'can't upgrade a thing on laptops these days' that there'd be a huge market for this kind of thing.

The price just needs to keep coming down for most people to jump on board. There should be some sort of premium for a fully modular design like they have and fact is its a smaller company and prices will be higher as a result, but like their new 16" model with a 7700S, it's a bit over 2 grand when kitted out with 32 GB RAM and 1 TB SSD...and thats assuming you assemble the laptop yourself and bring your own OS with a 7940HS.

I;m seeing a 16" Asus TUF on newegg right now with a 7940HS, 7700S, 32 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD, Win 11....very similar specs but fully assembled and comes with OS. It's $1,429, well over $600 cheaper. I mean again, I expect a premium for Frameworks design, but well over $600? It just doesnt make sense.

Yeah, that is the problem for them and other noble attempts at this kind of thing in the smartphone space. Most people don't upgrade their laptops and those that do will only pay so much for the privilege.
