Based on past experiences with Columbia, I won't trust their waterproof

The way they make them waterproof is there's literally a waterproof plastic layer inside. But as you walk around with time that plastic layer will break/rip and byebye waterproofing.

I bought these 4 years ago when they were called "PEAKFREAK™ VENTURE MID".
They are not bad for $48.

Didn't say the product wasn't great. Just "waterproof" is not a real thing nor does GORE-TEX make that claim.

Again, if people want to split hairs...it goes both ways.

Side note: is there a gif of a point flying over someone's head?

Do you use it? Got mine in 2021 in a black Friday sale (for $50). I don't believe will survive past this winter.

My wife and I had a very similar pairs we wore in Iceland at the tail end of last year's winter. Nice and warm, and waterproof. We were doing day hikes, glacier excursions, and tours out of a van. Not extreme use but far more than just walking around town.

Last I checked fish tanks and submarines weren't made of Goretex yet they claim to be waterproof. The lack of a "®" next to a word doesn't normally define the characteristics of the material's resistance to matter in a particular state.

BTW, GORE-TEX isn't waterproof either Wink

Water resistant*. You can't split hairs on one side then not do it everywhere.

Don't believe me, ask GORE-TEX

https://www.gore-tex.com/
"That's why all GORE‑TEX Products provide totally windproof, breathable, and water-resistant to durably waterproof protection."

I own this. My review:
- Very good hiking boots that's super comfortable to wear. It got me through a big trekking trip at Zion, Bryce (snow covered), and Grand Canyon
- Yes, it's waterproof because the good leather used, I had it in heavy rain, super wet grass and snow, no water inside. (I suggest heavy, warm wool socks)
- Columbia.com is a terrible ecommerce with super poor customer service. First time 15% coupon doesn't work. You can not cancel or change order once placed. They also sent a shoe 1 size smaller than ordered, I can not return at local Columbia outlet (some stupid reason that I paid with paypal), then when initiated a return, they want to charge $6 to ship it back.

SO MAKE SURE YOU KNOW YOUR SIZE as you only get 1 chance to get it right or suffer terrible headache to deal with customer service. The customer service is even worse than Adidas at eBay.

Goretex is just a plastic sheet that's been stretched to create microscopic holes. Big enough for water vapor (individual water molecules) to pass through, but small enough that liquid water can't. The patent on it expired back in '97, so anyone is allowed to sell it now. (The guy who "invented" it was just the first to notice the holes were always round/oval, and not tears like you'd expect from fabric. So he realized the holes could be made a consistent size if you stretched it carefully.)

The true value in the Goretex name is the reputation for quality and consistency they've built up behind it. They charge an arm and a leg to carry their name, but if you need it to work (e.g. you're going to hike the Himalayas), then it's worth paying for it. (I've had only one Goretex item fail, and that was a year-old shoe. I think a taped seam cape apart in the toe area of a shoe after a year of flexing, allowing water to leak in.)

I've tried several non-Goretex brands of waterproofing. Some work, some don't. It's been over 25 years now since the patent expired, so there's been enough time for other brands to iron out the kinks and develop consistency. But so far none of them seem to take quality as seriously as Goretex. For casual day hiking, it's worth taking a chance with a different brand if you don't want to pay the Goretex tax. Just make sure you test-dunk it in the bathtub to see if it has any leaks when new, so you can return it immediately. But for stuff I'll take on an extended hike or that I plan to keep for 10+ years, I usually stick with Goretex.

I find the Columbia boots to be an affordable alternative to Merrell or Keen. They probably won't last as long, but they're generally very comfortable and get the job done. But don't expect them to last for a decade. I just retired a pair that I had for less than two years. But I would wear them all the time, not just on hikes. So the tread wore down a lot faster. No regrets.
