I bought these 4 years ago when they were called "PEAKFREAK™ VENTURE MID".
They are not bad for $48.
Again, if people want to split hairs...it goes both ways.
Side note: is there a gif of a point flying over someone's head?

BTW, GORE-TEX isn't waterproof either

Don't believe me, ask GORE-TEX
https://www.gore-tex.com/
"That's why all GORE‑TEX Products provide totally windproof, breathable, and water-resistant to durably waterproof protection."

- Very good hiking boots that's super comfortable to wear. It got me through a big trekking trip at Zion, Bryce (snow covered), and Grand Canyon
- Yes, it's waterproof because the good leather used, I had it in heavy rain, super wet grass and snow, no water inside. (I suggest heavy, warm wool socks)
- Columbia.com is a terrible ecommerce with super poor customer service. First time 15% coupon doesn't work. You can not cancel or change order once placed. They also sent a shoe 1 size smaller than ordered, I can not return at local Columbia outlet (some stupid reason that I paid with paypal), then when initiated a return, they want to charge $6 to ship it back.
SO MAKE SURE YOU KNOW YOUR SIZE as you only get 1 chance to get it right or suffer terrible headache to deal with customer service. The customer service is even worse than Adidas at eBay.
The true value in the Goretex name is the reputation for quality and consistency they've built up behind it. They charge an arm and a leg to carry their name, but if you need it to work (e.g. you're going to hike the Himalayas), then it's worth paying for it. (I've had only one Goretex item fail, and that was a year-old shoe. I think a taped seam cape apart in the toe area of a shoe after a year of flexing, allowing water to leak in.)
I've tried several non-Goretex brands of waterproofing. Some work, some don't. It's been over 25 years now since the patent expired, so there's been enough time for other brands to iron out the kinks and develop consistency. But so far none of them seem to take quality as seriously as Goretex. For casual day hiking, it's worth taking a chance with a different brand if you don't want to pay the Goretex tax. Just make sure you test-dunk it in the bathtub to see if it has any leaks when new, so you can return it immediately. But for stuff I'll take on an extended hike or that I plan to keep for 10+ years, I usually stick with Goretex.
